External GPS device

Hi, I am an avid biker and hiker and just starting out as a Google guide. I am interested to know if anyone is using external GPS units with their phones while taking 360 pics. I am interested for two reasons. One is to get more accurate GPS coordinates for my pictures so that they will auto connect better. The second reason is that I would like to map the local trails. Many of them are not on Google Maps. I would love it if Google would let me post these trails on the map as well.

The units I am looking at are ones like the Garmin GLO or the Bad Elf products. I

Thanks,

Rich

@RichMcLoughlin Would be interesting how this works. My phone GPS is not very reliable… especially out of city where there’s no cell signal…

You probably should take a long hard look at the Garmin Virb spherical camera, expensive, but its reason for living is data… lots of data, altitude, barometer, GPS, Garmin are very good at matching video location to data tracks for their heads-up data overlay on the VIRB series video, im sure the VIRB spherical will be the same in that regard. and its self-contained so no need to turn the phone on for geotagging.

Ive been looking at the Virb for the exact same reason you are, bike trails, want to use the video-record - convert to a series of spheres. but that seems to be a ThetaV feature for now, Virb should be better with 5.7k instead of the 4k Theta.

Hi @BoLorentzen ,

That really is an incredible camera, yet it is more than I want to spend at this time. But, its not out of the realm of possibility. I think I’m going to call Garmin support to find out if the Garmin Glo can provide GPS data to the Google Streetview app or if it only provides GPS data to Garmin apps.

I decided to buy the Bad Elf Pro+ due to its compatibility with both iOS and many apps I use.

I’ll let you know how it works out.

Hi @RichMcLoughlin

I’m also considering adding a Bad elf GPS receiver (with lightning connector) to my setup. I hope to use it with Insta360 one x and Iphone 7.

Just wondering how it worked out for you?

Thanks
