Hi all
I sometimes check the settings of google maps, especially after I read something about a new option or feature. Some days ago I found an option in “navigation settings” that wasn’t available in Europe till this week: “extended instructions while walking”: it’s at the bottom of the list within “navigation option” under the heading “walking options” or something like that.
I know there’s an option available in the US that was called “pedestrian modus for the blind”, and I’m not sure if both “extended instructions while walking” and pedestrian modus are doing the same. But if pedestrian modus for the blind was renamed to “extended instructions while walking” and so now being available in Europe, I’m not impressed. Sorry.
I tried it out:
I asked for a known route while staying at home: I explored the route step by step.
I can’t compare with the pedestrian modus as I didn’t have it in Belgium. If the extra walking info etc. is the pedestrian modus, it seems to rely on street view, as you can use street view when following the steps. But a totally blind person can’t use street view: talkback isn’t describing the visual content from street view.
There are some issues: I was told to follow a street, luckily I know the street and knew I had toturn left when leaving my home, but instructions never say “take street on your left, right, …”, You really need to know the route.
At a certain moment I got the instruction to cross a street, but I suppose this crossing the street instruction is referring to the last mentioned street? I would suggest to explicitely say: “cross x or y street” so by naming the street you must cross in the instructions of crossing the street.
Another thing: my point of destination was mentioned in the last step of instructions, but no indication if it was on my left hand or right hand. Luckily I know the route that was described, so I know that the point of destination is on my right hand. But this wasn’t mentioned.
Conclusion: I can’t tell if this new option is the pedestrian modus for the blind, but you only can use it on known routes. For environments or routes that aren’t familiar to the user, the instructions aren’t concrete =specific enough.
I would say: try it out for yourself, without using street view. It’s possible I myself did something wrong, but if I did everything correctly, I’m afraid my conclusions will remain the same.
