What is the most interesting thing you’ve done as a Local Guide?
Well, I have no doubt about it: exploring, photographing and sharing through Street View the best places I have been in the last years. Honestly I downloaded the app for my iPhone few years ago just for curiosity, attracted to 360-degree photos, but now it’s a faithful companion during my travels. It’s a super-useful thing, because I can photograph not only the view that I see in front of me, but also the whole location where I am! I thought that it was very cool. So I started photographing using Street View more and more, and for me at the beginning it was a method for storing memories of my holidays or short trips, but suddenly I realized that I was doing much more: I was sharing some useful and/or interesting places for many other people.
Here there are some example of locations where I have been and where I took some photos using Street View (the links to the 360-degrees photos are in the descriptions! )
Back in 2015, I traveled to South Africa with my family, and I took my favorite photograph of the vacation on the edge of the Blyde River Canyon. I remember that I was particularly happy to upload this photo because it was the first 360° photo ever take in that spot! Besides, the view from here is absolutely stunning. Not too far from this point (20 minutes by car), at the mouth of the Blyde river there’s an incredible geological site called Bourke’s Luck Potholes, which is full of cylindrical rock sculptures and waterfalls: definitely worth a visit.
In the summer of 2016 me and my girlfriend went to the island of Crete, Greece, and one day we decided to explore a beach famous for its beauty. After 30 minutes of walking on a path, we arrived in the beautiful Balos beach, located in the north-western part of Crete, in the municipality of Kissamos. It was a pretty hard path, so if you decide to come to Balos bring some water and resistant shoes. But of course, at the end of the descent your effort is fully rewarded with the white sand beach and a crystal clear sea.
I was in Russia last summer, and I could not resist photographing its skyscrapers! These are two Moscow skyscrapers, Imperia and Evolution, located in the financial district. The financial district (also called Moscow City or Moscow International Business Center) is a part of the capital that stands out from the rest of the city for its modernity: in fact, it is the largest complex of modern skyscrapers in Europe. On the 56th floor of Imperia tower, you can access to the Moscow City Museum, a museum and at the same time an observation point.
I would never have taken so many photos, shared so many beautiful places, if I had not initially had positive feedback that spurred me to go on, like for example a lot of views to my photos which positively excited me and pushed me to do better, or the badge of Google Trusted Photographer on Street View. Even if I’m not a professional photographer, I love to think that I contribute to help someone who was searching for a particular photo of a place or an advice, and all this within that big family that is Local Guides, where solidarity among users is a key value. One little effort could make the difference for many people. Therefore, in conclusion, exploring the world and sharing it was the most interesting thing I’ve done as a Local Guide!
