Exploring the Best and Worst Public Toilets in Rajshahi

Rajshahi is one of the cleanest cities in the world. And we know that one of the most important components of a clean city is the public toilet system.

Public toilets are essential infrastructure for a city. They provide a basic human need for people to be able to use the restroom in a safe and clean environment. Individuals may resort to using unsanitary and illegal places without public toilets, leading to health and sanitation issues. In addition, the lack of public toilets can also be a barrier for some people, such as those with disabilities or the elderly, to participate in public life fully.

They also support local businesses, as people are more likely to visit and stay longer if they know there are clean and accessible restrooms available. Another local guide from my city Rahim and I visited several public toilets in Rajshahi city, reviewed them, and updated their features on Google Maps.

  1. Zilla Krira Public Toilet

There are separate toilets for men and women. The door lock was working fine. We found the floor clean and dry. There is a female staff to take care. However, there is no entry system for disabled people in this toilet. We have personally spoken to its responsible authority, and he has expressed interest in adding wheelchair-accessible features here.

  1. Station Public Toilet

It is a public toilet located in front of the railway station. There is ‍always a huge crowd here. The lock in the toilet was working, and there was a separate arrangement for the shower. But found the floor quite wet and damp here. The entrance was accessible for wheelchairs.

  1. Vadra Bus Stand Public Toilet

Although it says public toilet, it is a privately owned toilet. The toilet size is small, and space is limited. There was no plaster on the floor. But inside the toilet was clean enough. The toilet is located a little way down a narrow alleyway and is quite difficult to find.

  1. Talaimari Public Toilet

This toilet is one of the most beautifully constructed buildings we have seen throughout this tour. There is less traffic here. Mostly rickshaw pullers and day laborers use this toilet. The biggest limitation of the toilet is its open roof. Cleanliness is somewhat neglected here.

  1. Public Toilet near P. N. School

Despite being next to a busy market, this toilet felt quite unclean. The access road to the toilet was very narrow, and there was not enough space in front of the toilet. The environment of the toilet was dirty.

  1. Bhuban Mohan Park Public toilet

This is the cleanest toilet we found on this tour. There was a separate unit for females, which was separated by a curtain. The toilet floor was clean and relatively dry. The infrastructure is new, and activities are well organized.

During our visit, we made a short video for future reference. The video is in the Bengali language. But you can get an idea visually.

Overall, public toilets are an important aspect of a city’s infrastructure that contributes to its residents’ and visitors’ well-being and inclusivity.

I saw your title and burst out in laughter! Hmmm. Are you from India? Because I see the ‘toilet’ is a recurring issue. I have heard it during ‘meetups’, seen it on ‘Idea exchange’, etc. I am happy to know that you live in one of the cleanest cities.

I can imagine trying this in Nigeria! Yuck! The worst will make anyone cringe. I hope we begin to pay much attention to the toilets. I like your post @NahidHossain

@RosyKohli I am tagging you to this post because I want to hear from you

I am from Bangladesh, and it’s great to see that public toilets are being discussed in various forums, including meetups and idea exchanges.

I agree that paying attention to toilets is important, as access to clean and functional toilets is a basic human need.

I’m glad you liked my post and hope that by raising awareness about the state of public toilets in Bangladesh, we can improve the situation. Thank you for your support!

Yes, dear @Ewaade_3A and @NahidHossain ,

Even in India, many toilets are unusable, according to me. Even some newly built toilets are spoiled by the locals - very sad.

The only hope is that the general awareness is building up and may be in another couple of years, we can see better maintenance.

Regards to you both.
