When I arrived in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) with only 48 hours to spare, I faced a major traveller’s dilemma: Should I spend hours sitting in transit for the iconic Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels
I chose to skip them entirely. Instead, I dedicated my time to mapping out the city’s authentic everyday pulse, reviewing transit options, and pinpointing fantastic spots for the global community.

Transit Review: VietTravel Airlines: The New Alternative
Coming from Da Nang, I chose to skip VietJet and book VietTravel Airlines to test their service quality for future travellers.
The Experience: The aircraft interior was remarkably clean and well-maintained.
Comfort & Legroom: The leg space was pleasantly spacious and highly comfortable for a budget option
Amenities: They provide an excellent in-flight menu with plenty of vegetarian drinks and coffee options
The flight was completely on time.
Foodie Find: Premium Pure Veg Indian Food in Saigon
Finding authentic, comforting food abroad is always a massive win for our community. I pinned Tanishq Pure Veg Indian Restaurant right in the heart of the city.
Vibe: The ambience leans premium and luxurious
The Menu: They boast an expansive selection of North Indian, Rajasthani, and Gujarati cuisines.
What I Ordered: I tried both their North Indian and traditional Gujarati thalis and even got a piping hot Gujarati Khichdi later!. The food tasted just like a comforting home-cooked meal.
Accessibility Note: Good price for the quality they provide.
Unwinding at Saigon Riverside Park
Instead of waking up early for a crowded tour bus, I started my morning with a peaceful stroll at Saigon Riverside Park.
The View: It offers a stark, beautiful contrast of calm flowing rivers set against the backdrop of distant, towering modern skyscrapers
Local Tip: While the morning is incredibly serene and empty, locals mention that the park completely lights up at night, making it the perfect spot for catching evening river cruises.
A Nostalgic Stop: Saigon Central Post Office
This was arguably the absolute highlight of my 2-day itinerary. The Saigon Central Post Office is a spectacular architectural marvel with high European ceilings and an ancient, historical charm.
The Activity: It is still a fully operational post office. I purchased beautiful local postcards from the central souvenir stalls.
The Process: The staff is helpful—they neatly taped my custom envelopes with and assisted with the international stamp pricing. It cost 65,000 VND for two envelopes to clear the stamp counter for international shipping.
The Experience: There is a dedicated section with rustic wooden benches where you can sit down, write heartfelt messages, decorate your cards, and drop them right into the classic mailing baskets
Walking Down Book Street
Located just a short walking distance from the Central Post Office is Saigon’s famous Book Street.
The Vibe: It genuinely feels like stepping straight into a fairy tale. The entire street is shaded by beautiful green trees and lined with rows of vibrant book stalls.
What to Expect: You will find everything from global classics like Sherlock Holmes editions to quirky bookmarks and local keychains. Most stalls even run a flat 10% discount! It’s an incredible place to grab a local coffee and watch people read in a quiet, artistic atmosphere.
Transit Notes: Flying Back to India (Air India Review)
Leaving Vietnam via Ho Chi Minh City’s airport requires a bit of foresight.
Airport Tip: The immigration lines and security checks can get incredibly packed in the evening. Make sure you give yourself plenty of buffer time to clear security comfortably! On the plus side, the airport features a dedicated shower station if you need to freshen up before a long-haul flight.
Flight Experience: My Air India flight from Saigon to Delhi was comfortable, featuring a clean layout, a dedicated mobile charging stand right next to the port, and delicious Indian meals onboard dal, chawal, and fresh veggies
