Mauritius is globally famous for its ultra-luxury beachfront resorts and exclusive vacation packages. Because of this, many people assume it’s an impossibly expensive destination to visit independently.
I recently returned from an incredible 1-week trip to this beautiful island country, and I’m happy to report that you can absolutely experience this paradise on a budget! By skipping pre-packaged tours and making a few smart choices, I managed to save over ₹2,75,000 without compromising on the quality of my trip.
The Secret Weapon: Connecting with a Local Guide
Before diving into my budget hacks, I have to give a massive shoutout to fellow local guide @SwetaDhondoo. She actually resides in Mauritius and was kind enough to share her incredible local expertise with me. Thanks to her references, I was able to discover hidden gems and authentic local spots that I would have completely missed on any standard tourist itinerary. For now, here are the three major foundational hacks that completely transformed my travel budget:
Flight Deal Tracking
If you are flying out of India, direct flights from Mumbai take only about 5.5 hours. While typical ticket prices fluctuate between ₹50,000 and ₹70,000, I bypassed third-party aggregators and monitored the official Air Mauritius website directly. I managed to snag a promotional deal for just ₹32,000–₹35,000, instantly saving around ₹20,000!
Local Guide Tip: The in-flight service was great, and they even served a hot, delicious Indian breakfast featuring idli, masala dosa, and sambar.
Opting for Self-Drive over Private Taxis
Hiring a private taxi with a driver is a massive expense here, costing roughly ₹10,000 per day (which easily totals ₹70,000 for a week). Instead, I rented a compact, fuel-efficient hybrid car (a Toyota Aqua) from ‘Race Car Rental’, located just a 2-minute walk to the left of the airport exit. It cost me only about ₹10,500 for the entire 7 days!
Driving Tip: Mauritius uses right-hand drive vehicles and the roads are exceptionally well-maintained with clear speed limit markers. It feels incredibly familiar and comfortable for Indian drivers.
Staying in Flic en Flac (Cozy Airbnb vs. Luxury Resort)
Instead of spending ₹35,000 per night at a high-end resort, I booked a lovely, fully equipped 2-BHK Airbnb apartment in the Flic en Flac region for just ₹40,000 for the entire week.
Why Flic en Flac? Strategically, it’s a goldmine. Located on the west coast, it sits perfectly in the middle of the island. You can drive to almost any destination—North, South, or East—in under an hour. Plus, the stunning Flic en Flac beach was just a 2-minute walk from my doorstep, and having a full kitchen allowed me to cook quick meals and save heavily on food.
Quick Airport Checklist for Your Arrival:
Visa & Immigration: Visa-on-arrival is straightforward. Just remember to fill out the online health declaration form before you land to speed through immigration.
Currency Exchange: It’s highly convenient to carry US Dollars and exchange them for Mauritian Rupees directly at the airport counters.
Staying Connected: Skip the pricier ₹1500 tourist SIM packages. Look for the Chili tourist SIM stand at the airport, which offers great connectivity for around ₹700 Mauritian Rupees.
Mauritius is a breathtaking destination with a deep cultural connection to India (it truly feels like a mini-India in the Indian Ocean!). I highly recommend exploring it on your own terms.
