Hello fellow Local Guides,
​Beyond famous landmarks and scenic routes, travel is truly about understanding the unique communities and enduring cultural traditions rooted in our regions.
​My introduction to this community came in 2024 during an official visit to a hospital in the Bargur hills near Anthiyur, Erode district. I was deeply intrigued to see the people there preparing their own food entirely by themselves, even while away from home.
​In this video, we explore the distinct heritage and values of the Lingayat community across Tamil Nadu—from the slopes of Thalavadi in Erode to Salem, Dharmapuri, and the wider Kongu region. Anchored in the philosophy of “Work is Worship” (Kayakave Kailasa) and inner devotion (Ishtalinga worship), they maintain a remarkable, self-reliant lifestyle—strictly cooking their own meals even while traveling and preserving time-honored principles of mindful living.

The Lingayat community is flourishing in Maharashtra also, @RtnArulPrakasamT
Some of them were our very good neighbors; they kept to themselves, and we did not interact with them beyond a limit.

They were kind, helpful, and socially active.

I explored Tamil Nadu completely - literally every district :+1:
Plenty of friends in Karur, Namakkal, Salem, Erode, and Trichy area.
Yes, and also Madurai.

But I was not a local guide back then :smiley:
So I paid very little attention to the local food culture and mainly focused on temple visits.

​You are very right—while the Lingayat community is prominent in Karnataka and Maharashtra, they have also carved out a unique space in pockets of Tamil Nadu. In places like Erode, their active social role is especially visible during events like the Anthiyur Gurunathaswamy Temple car festival.
​That is an impressive breadth of exploration across Tamil Nadu! Since you’re a Local Guide now, revisiting the Kongu belt—especially Salem, Erode, and Namakkal—for a dedicated food walk to experience both the regional cuisine and the distinct traditional Lingayat vegetarian food would be a wonderful experience.

We had lingayat community here also in Maharashtra.

However they were popular for their specific gratitude towards lords even in shirdi saibaba temple once I saw what all gold ornament they all were carrying surrender to god even their Bangle ring neck chain all in one go..this was surprise for me

Yes they are little reserved but mixed in their community very well..
