Slovenia is a small country in Eastern Europe bordering Austria & Italy. Its a hidden gem for travellers wanting to explore nature. Its a very small country having tremendous natural beauty like mountains, lakes, meadows , rivers and caves. I recommend to do the below mentioned:
- Lake Bled: You wouldn’t find a more beautiful lake probably anywhere in the world. Best would be to find a hotel at Lake Bled only to stay. Else one can take a bus from Ljubljana, the capital city which is almost an hour from Lake Bled. There are boat rides which can take one to an island in the middle of the lake. Great experience. One can take a stroll around the lake and soak in nature.
- Lake Bohinj
It’s some kilometers further away from Lake Bled. lake Bohinj is more pristine. There aren’t many travellers there. Public bus will take you there. be careful about where to get down. Best is to get down at the stop from where you can walk up to the Vogel Cable Car. It is the penultimate stop from the last one. First go up the mountain from the Cable car to get a wonderful view of the Triglav National park. There are 2 levels, try both.
Once you come down, walk to the lake side. There is a nice restaurent by the lake side. You will find many campers . Time permitting, one can take a walk around the lake or go for boating. Water is crystal clear here.
- Vintgar Gorge
It is a few kilometers away from Lake Bled. You can hire a taxi from Lake Bled or can even walk to this location. There is a wonderful walk around a gorge with river flowing below you. The entire walk to and fro may be 4 Kms. Its a wonderful experience. At the end , you can see a waterfall.
- Postjona Caves
Its almost an hour away from Ljubljana. One can go by bus or train- bus recommended. Caves are almost a kilometer walk from the bus stand. This is a very old limestone cave attracting millions of visitors every year. Not to be missed. There is an underground river. Take the train ride inside the caves.
There are many other attractions in this country. Old cities, National parks, Sea Coast to name a few. I would strongly recommend to make it a part of your European itinerary for a minimum of 4 days.
