Via Appia Antica is one of the most important Roman roads of the ancient republic. It was built in 312 BC and used as a main route for military supplies. It is surrounded by remains of ancient buildings. One of the famous ones is the church of Domine Quo Vadis (Church of St Mary in Palmis). It is said that at this location St. Peter met Jesus while the former was fleeing persecution in Rome. Peter asked Jesus, “Lord, where are you going?” (Domine, quo vadis?). Jesus answered, “I am going to Rome to be crucified again”.Ashamed, St. Peter returned to Rome to continue his mission and face his fate to be crucified.
You could feel the atmosphere of the ancient world and at the same time have fun riding a bicycle. The road length is more than 16 km. Unlike the other landmarks in Rome, this one is not overcrowded. It feels like you are in the countryside but inside the borders of Rome. If you like activities and culture, you defiantly should check it.
