Explore Sandipani Ashram Ujjain: The Sacred Place Where Lord Krishna Studied

Ujjain is best known for Mahakal, but the city has many other places connected with its history and religious traditions. Sandipani Ashram is one of them.

The Ashram is traditionally associated with Maharishi Sandipani and the Gurukul where Krishna ji, Balram ji and Sudama ji are believed to have studied.

History of Sandipani Ashram

Ujjain was known as Avantika in ancient times and has long been associated with learning and spirituality.

Lord Krishna and the Gurukul Tradition

A traditional depiction of Krishna, Balram and Sudama studying at the Gurukul of Maharishi Sandipani. The artwork represents the traditional story associated with their education at the Ashram.

Gomti Kund

A traditional story connects Gomti Kund with Lord Krishna and Maharishi Sandipani. According to this belief, Krishna brought sacred water here for his Guru.

Ankapat

The area around Sandipani Ashram is known as Ankapat.

According to local and religious tradition, a stone here is marked with numbers from 1 to 100 and is associated with the learning tradition of Lord Krishna.

What Can You See at Sandipani Ashram?

The main attractions include Gomti Kund, Ankapat, temples and the peaceful spiritual surroundings of the Ashram.

During my visit, I walked around the Ashram and looked at the paintings, sculptures and temple areas. I also visited Gomti Kund and took some photographs of the place. The paintings and artwork around the Ashram were some of the things that caught my attention.

How to Reach Sandipani Ashram

Sandipani Ashram is located in the Ankapat area on Mangalnath Road, Ujjain.

The Ashram is around 4.8 km from Ujjain Railway Station. E-rickshaws, autos and cabs are available from the station, and it usually takes around 20 minutes to reach, depending on traffic

From Mahakaleshwar Temple, the Ashram is around 4.5 km away, so you can easily include it in the same Ujjain sightseeing plan.

Sandipani Ashram Timings

Sandipani Ashram generally remains open for devotees from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Morning is a good time to visit if you prefer a quieter atmosphere. Timings may change during festivals or special occasions, so it is worth checking before you go.

Entry Fee

There is generally no entry fee to visit the ashram.

You can also visit Mahakaleshwar Temple, Mangalnath Temple, Kal Bhairav Temple and Bhartrihari Caves during your Ujjain trip.

My Experience at Sandipani Ashram

I visited Sandipani Ashram during my Ujjain trip. I walked around the Ashram, looked at the paintings and sculptures, and also visited Gomti Kund. I took these photographs during my visit and wanted to share some of the things I saw here.

The place is closely connected with the traditional story of Krishna’s Gurukul life, which makes it an interesting stop while exploring Ujjain. If you are already visiting Mahakaleshwar, you can also add Sandipani Ashram to your plan. Sandipani Ashram Ujjain – Quick Information
