Recently, the ancient town of Badagry falls within my accessibility radar. And in the spirit of Local Guide which is to help and guide people to explore the world around them I want to share my experience in order to help people easily explore the town of Badagry.
Badagry no doubt is a historical town located north of Lagos state. It is the home of the ancient wawu Kingdom. This serene and peaceful town is situated along the coastal line of the Atlantic Ocean. And so because of its proximity to water the occupation here is majorly fishing.
Badagry is reputed to be one of the first African cities, and the first in Nigeria to have early contact with the western world. It was the hub of commerce and trade including the infamous slave trade. It was also home to early Christian missionaries and European settlers. In fact there are documented evidences that Christianity in Nigeria was propagated on the soil of Badagry. It was also here that the first school started in Nigeria.
Badagry has many historical sites and aesthetic scenes that may interest tourists. And every year this ancient town attracts a good number of tourists from across the world. Some of these sites that tourist can explore include the oldest storey building in Nigeria built by the early missionaries in 1845. It is still standing till date.
Another place of interest to explore is the Badagry Heritage Musuem and the Royal family slave relic Musuem where you can behold some of the relics and vestiges of the slave trade. Here you can relive the epic historical moments of the slave trade. One can easily feel the pulse of the slave trading era by visiting these museums.
From here you can proceed by boat to the attenuation well or point of no return. It was here that slaves embarked on the journey of no return to Europe and the new world.
Badagry is also blessed with so many beautiful beaches in case you want to watch the roaring wave of the sea and feel the cool breeze of the sea, and possibly take a dive. Notable among them is the SunTan beach resort. Here visitors can explore the natural scene of the beach. There are still many other places of interest to explore in this historical town of Badagry.
