A new year dawns on us again. And with each year, come changes, new things, new experiences and new places to explore. A few of our community members came up with an interesting activity idea for the first week of 2018 for anyone who is keen to explore and share. We were going to do that in our community, but thought it would be nice to share it here, so whoever that is keen can also join in also.
This week, wherever we are located, whenever we have time, we should go and look for any food/snack in our locality, which we have not tried before, or haven’t eaten for the longest time, which we really wanted to go but haven’t had the opportunity yet to. For this , we will go and visit the place, eat and share our experiences about the food and the place, and update the information in Google Maps, write a review, upload photos/videos about it. Please feel free to join us in this.
My 2018 first “new” food experience:
Aba’s Nasi Lemak, SS2 Petaling Jaya, my first time trying!

Nasi Lemak is one of the “national dishes” of Malaysia, and for the longest time, has been embraced by many different ethnic groups in the country, the Malays, Chinese, Indians and others. Nasi Lemak loosely translates as “Rich Rice” which basically means rich because it’s cooked in thick coconut milk giving it a velvety smooth texture which goes very well with spicy side dishes. It’s served with any number of side dishes. Nasi Lemak is a must try whenever someone visits Malaysia. And no 2 shops selling Nasi Lemak will be exactly the same!
Aba’s Nasi Lemak is a Chinese version of the Nasi Lemak Dish. Located in the food court of district of SS2 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor in Malaysia. They open each day (except Thursday) at about 6pm and close when they sell out. Each day, just as they open, there is always a long queue of people waiting for their turn to have it there or take away for eating at home.
For the longest time over 15 years, I have visited this food court many multiple times, but as far as this shop was concerned as much as I was curious of the popularity, I was put off by the very long queues, and had never tried this shop before and had always eaten something else. So, it’s the new year, and since we should all try something new, so I had queued just before they opened, and very quickly a very long queue had continued behind me. I was glad I had come earlier. Even then, it took over 15 minutes before it came to my turn, because many of the people before me were packing so many parcels of it. It must be good then!
On this day, they had close to 30 different varieties of dishes, everything looked so scrumptious. Because it was my first time, I was going to try at least a few side dishes, which really wasn’t traditional as far as Nasi Lemak goes. I had taken curried wild boar (yes, wild boar). A piece of Korean style deep fried chicken in sticky chilly sauce. Long green beans fried in sambal balacan. And bitter gourd cooked with salted duck egg yolk. They also have a variety of many other dishes such as fish, squid, egg, chicken, shrimp etc etc.
The dishes were really tasty and delicious. For the food, I had paid RM 11.50, which was just under USD 4. And for the quality of food, and I would say a little exotic because of the wild boar, the price is really worth it. I particularly like the crispy fried chicken, and the very smoky curried wild boar.
I would recommend to try this place at least once. I would come back and queue again to have this.
