Experience A piece of Asian art

Shanghai museum isone of China’s first world-class modern museums. If you want to know more about Chinese art, Shanghai museum in the Republica square is the right place to get the information you may be looking for. I’m mostly impressed by the “Masks of Tibetan ethnicity”. Be ready to queue up to 2 hours if you have decided to travel during any Chinese holiday.

@FlameFox Generally speaking there are many ethnic groups living and lived in ancient times in China. And each of them has had it’s own to express their religion and lifestyle. But those masks in Shanghai museum represent how different ethnic groups demonstrate the sacred religions world in contrast to the secular world. I liked the combination of colors of Tibetan Masks. I liked the choosen characters because through exaggeration they say a lot. It’s a kid of art I’m fond of.

That’s really interesting point of view, @Hasmik . Thank you for clarifying on that. It looks like you have lived through the emotions of these masks indeed which is rare for regular visitors but also an important quality. Did you notice common expressions between masks in this museum?

@FlameFox Thanks a lot to notice so much in just one comment. It says a lot about you.

Well, they do look alike at first sight, but if you have a closer look… I can’t say they are the same. To me each of those masks was a special character with a unique massage from ancient times. That’s exactly how I felt. Each mask has a huge amount of emotions and the one who looks attentively and is familiar with history will definitely feel it.

Many thanks for the impression @Hasmik

One of my favorite things to do while on travel is museum visits. Hearing that masks don’t have lookalikes, have the spirit - which is typical for the Asian culture and full of colors makes me even more curios about this one. Is it possible for the visitors to interact with the exposition in any way, like quick games within each hall or interactive tasks there?

@FlameFox It’s a traditional museum without any opportunity of Interaction. But if you’re looking for a more interactive one in Shanghai, Science and Technology museum may be a good choice. I haven’t been there to be honest, cannot tell more but I have some friends who personally say that museum is interactive you can play some games, it’s filled with multimedia concept and seems intere.

These are kind of always interactive indeed  Thanks for the suggestion. I have noticed the decor exhibit and just, thought of such facilities. Does that mean the masks museum is very old (as founded long ago)?

@FlameFox The museum is not old, it has founded in 1996. Just it’s type is different, not interactive but still has a lot to tell.

Ow, sorry, @Hasmik ! Did not mean to offend or anything. It was just a suggestion because may places from the early nineties are more focused on the exposition. It looks like this place is based on traditions. Something quite different compared to the latest movements and charming indeed

@FlameFox Everything is fine, there was nothing offended . This museum is just an ordinary, traditional art-history museum. But you may spend a few hours there if you’re interested in Chinese history :hugs:

Ow, does that place represent this part of the Chinese culture as well? I have noticed the props and stage design among your photos above and thought it’s mainly focused on the theater. Also, many thanks for understanding @Hasmik :))

@FlameFox Those stages are just for decoration. I liked them so I decided to share . But the museum is all about ancient Chinese art. You can find ancient Chinese jades, pictures, calligraphy, sculptures, paintings and not only.
