Evolution of What Local Guides Means to Me

When I started contributing to Google Maps, I had no idea I was becoming part of something so much bigger than myself and my contributions.

I started contributing to Google Maps as a Local Guide in 2018. At first, I treated it as just another review system. I enjoyed helping people find quality places to eat, shop, and have fun. I was also excited to collect points. I had no idea what the points were for our why they mattered, but I liked achieving different goal levels.

At the end of 2018, I was extremely fortunate to attend Local Guides Connect in San Francisco. This event changed my whole view of the Local Guide Program. So many Local Guides had a higher purpose for contributing. Local Guides were contributing to make the world more accessible, increase safety, reduce environmental impact, and connect with members around the globe. My eyes were opened to how my contributions can make a difference in the world around me.

Starting in 2019, I continued to contribute but keeping a purpose in mind as I contributed. My reviews became more descriptive, my photos improved, and I used the power of creating lists for myself and to assist others. However, I was still looking for my cause. I had attended a group on Accessibility. The session was so eye-opening. I am more aware of my surroundings and how accessible each business is that I review. Accessibility is not just a question in maps for me any longer; it is a service (and a right) for those that need the information.

I’ve also started to realize how vital Google Map contributions are for small businesses. I’ve found so many small businesses that have no profile or an underdeveloped profile on Google Maps. I take the time to talk with their owners and share the importance of keeping their profile fresh, as well as using the features that can help their potential customers learn more about their business. I love watching traffic increase for businesses that started to harness the power of actively managing their profile.

Helping small businesses has become my passion. Helping them understand the benefits and features is my newest way to help Google Maps guide the world to better experiences. I still love adding my contributions, but I love empowering small businesses to take
