After a long time, I come to my village to spend this Eid holiday. This is the first time I enjoy the Eid in my village during harvest season (Baishakhi). It is good to say that my birthplace is in the famous Haor region of Sunamganj district. There are have many well-known tourist centers, Tanguar Haor, Shaheed Siraj Lake, Shimul Bagan and Jhadukata river and many more natural beauty. Its called by mini Switzerland also.
I left Dhaka for Sunamganj on Eid night. When I reached Sunamganj on the morning of Eid, I saw small children walking around happily wearing new Eid clothes. After a while, I started wishing Eid Mubarak to the children of that unknown village from our bike. Here and there are held traditional small fairs. The village people are shopping there in groups. And near of that most of the farmers in the paddy field are working, forgetting the joy of Eid. For them, the big Eid is to be able to dry the paddy and bring it home with care.
Apart from the beauty of Haor, what tourists visiting Sunamganj do not see is the unbearable hardships and endless sacrifices of the locals. It is good to say that due to flood for 6 months paddy cultivation is done only once a year in our area. And that is called by âBaisakhiâ. At this time, the surrounding rural scenery is worth seeing. Sometimes the wood-splitting sun, sometimes the dark Baisakhi storm. Even in the terrible storm of Baisakhi, the boys and girls of the neighborhood are seen running to pick mangoes in the garden.
In this month the farmers dry the paddy straw in groups and keep it in stacks as food for the cattle throughout the year and fuel for their own cooking. Some try to fulfill their dreams by selling paddy. Flood-damaged houses are repaired. Prepare again for floods after summer. So that the well-arranged family - residence, food - chess and domesticated animals are not swept away by the tide of water again like last time.
This the life of our Haor region, 6 months of dry season, and the remaining 6 months of floating in the water and living without work. Some leave the village and run to the city. After watching all of that I realize how hard they work to produce food grains for living. And the people of the city waste that food carelessly. In fact, we all should come forward to increase agricultural production like them. Like Japan, we can easily solve the food problem by using science and technology in agriculture to produce maximum crops on our land.
And most important, we all should give respect to farmers and workers. Letâs stand by the helpless and flood affected people. Letâs extend a helping hand to them. Please donât waste food and give it to the hungry.
