I think the better way of sightseeing in Ueno and Asakusa is cycling. There are a lot of public rental cycles in this area. It takes half an hour by bike from Ueno Shinobazu Pond to Asakusa Sensoji. It is rather short distance.
Let’s start at Shinobazu Pond. You can see many boats rowing and Tokyo Sky Tree in the background.
Next you had better go to Ueno Zoo. The entrance is up the hill. You can see a baby panda, Shanshan. She is almost sleeping but sometimes fortunately walking around. There are many other popular animals such as gorillas, polar bears, elephants and monkeys. But spaces of animals are so small that it is generally said miserable for animals.
If you go to the north, you reach to Tokyo National Museum. It is the oldest and biggest museum in Japan. You can see a lot of Japanese arts and remains. Japan has a long history from an old stone ages to the present times. The Museum collects a lot of them including the national treasures and the important cultural assets. I especially recommend the back garden of the museum. It is open in spring and autumn seasons. Spring season is beautiful of cherry blossoms and autumn is variety of colorful leaves. This garden is not popular to foreigners right now. So please don’t miss this garden during these seasons.
Besides the Pond there is Shitamachi Museum. There you can see the old lives of the citizens in Showa Era. Also you can find the infant plays such as spinning tops, kites, marbles and so on.
You should also visit to Ameyoko where a lot of shops and dining stalls are for visitors. You can drink sake and eat yakitori or something.
From Ueno to Asakusa you run by bike along straight street. On the way there are Kappabashi ware shopping arcade, where you can buy a variety of cocking ware made in Japan and abroad.
Arriving at Asakusa you should visit at Kaminarimon Gate which has a big lantern. Many foreigners take photos in front of the gate. If you stop at Information center across the road from Kaminarimon, you can see overviews of Nakamise and Sensoji Temple from the top of the center. You can walk along Nakamise shops where you will get various souvenirs and Japanese sweets and so on. Ningyoyaki is recommended to eat with your walking. Around Sensoji Temple there are some activities such as goldfish catching, Kimono Rental and Jinrikisya. Goldfish catching is a game of infant which is exciting for adult too.
After playing in Asakusa district you should go to the bank of Sumida River, from there you can see Tokyo Sky Tree in front of you. Sumida River is popular spot of cherry blossoms in spring and fireworks in summer. A lot of people come and enjoy in both seasons every year.
