As the sun began its descent over the Mediterranean horizon, casting a golden hue over the city of Marsa Matrouh, my travel companion and I found ourselves drawn to a legendary oasis steeped in history and natural splendor. In 2022 a visit to Cleopatra’s Bath, an experience that left an indelible mark on our memories.
Nestled within a secluded rocky cove, this natural pool whispers tales of its storied past, where it is said to have been the cherished retreat of Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt. As we approached the site, the vivid imagery of Cleopatra’s graceful presence in these very waters danced in our minds, intertwining with the gentle lap of waves against the shore.
The pool, about two meters deep, is a natural marvel. Fed by hot springs, its waters are warm and enriched with minerals, offering a therapeutic embrace. As we dipped our toes into its welcoming warmth, the blend of history and nature’s caress was surreal. The clear water seemed to hold within it the secrets of the ages, offering a serene refuge much like it did for the famed queen.
Around us, the rugged rock formations stood guard, their stoic presence a stark contrast to the fluid dance of the water. The panoramic views of the sea were breathtaking, the vast expanse of blue meeting the sky at a distant horizon. It was easy to see why this secluded nook of the world was a haven of beauty and romance, a sanctuary from the bustling world beyond its rocky embrace.
For those who venture beneath the surface, the pool and its surrounding waters are a vibrant underwater tapestry. Snorkelers and divers are treated to a kaleidoscope of marine life, each creature a colorful inhabitant of this underwater realm. Schools of fish darted around us, unperturbed by our presence, as we explored this aquatic wonderland.
But it wasn’t just the physical beauty of Cleopatra’s Bath that captivated us. The air seemed thick with legends and myths, each adding a mystique layer to our experience. We were not just swimming in a pool but immersing ourselves in a piece of history, in tales of romance and beauty that have transcended time.
As our visit came to an end, we carried with us more than just memories of a beautiful natural site. Cleopatra’s Bath had offered us a rare glimpse into the past, a connection to a story much larger than ourselves. It stood as a testament to the enduring allure of Marsa Matrouh, a city that boasts stunning beaches and cradles a piece of history in its azure waters.
