If you have never seen the Emancipation Oak or heard the story this is an opportunity. It’s a part of the of the African American people’s history that is truly amazing. The lessons taught under this tree and the quest for the “Freedom Fort” during the Civil war convey a courageous and resilient people who helped forge our nation despite overwhelming obstacles. The Emancipation Oak has been lovingly cared for since the Civil War and is sacred. We will walk through the public spaces at Hampton University to Hampton National Cemetery. Our five-mile route will climb over the bridge to downtown Hampton and back. As you enter Hampton University on Settlers Landing Road take the first left and look for the Emancipation Oak on the left.
