Elephanta Caves: A Perfect Expression of Indian Art

The Elephanta Caves are a must-see for anyone visiting Mumbai. The caves are a collection of cave temples, predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

They’re situated on Elephanta Island, about 10 kms from Mumbai. The caves can be reached by an approximate 1-hour boat ride from Gateway of India.

There is something mysteriously alluring about the ancient rock-cut caves of Elephanta. Historians date them to be built anywhere between 5th century CE and 8th century CE. And the credit for their construction goes to the kings of the Kalachuri dynasty. Whatever the truth may be, these caves are a sight to behold. Carved out of the living rock, they are a testimony to man’s ingenuity and creativity.

The intricate carvings and sculptures that adorn the walls and ceilings of these caves are a marvel to behold. It is said that the entire structure was carved out of a single rock. The main attraction is the Trimurti, a sculpture of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.

The sculpture is so large that it takes up an entire room in the cave.

The caves are a beautiful and peaceful place to visit.

The experience is truly unique and unforgettable.

The boat ride there is also quite enjoyable.
