Ekattarso Mahadev Temple: A World Away From the World

The Ekattarso Mahadev Temple is a Shiv temple in Mitawali near Morena in Madhya Pradesh.
Also known as Chausath Yogini Temple, this is an awesome place that displays India’s ancient architecture.

The surrounding areas are tranquil as the place is hidden from civilization.

This temple was built in the 6th century AD and was the seat of education in astrology & mathematics.

Once you enter the main temple, you experience time travel, so this is a once in a lifetime wondrous experience.

The remains of the temples show the rich heritage of Indian architecture and science.

Travel Tips

The way to this beautiful place could be difficult from the nearest major town of Gwalior or Nurabad as the approach roads are being repaired or are under construction. So it is best to reach here from Morena as the road is in better condition from that side.

The best season to visit is winter or rainy. If you reach in summer then either go in the evenings and or early mornings.

Monument tips

There is ample parking at the base and the temple itself is located on top of a small hill. The temple is accessible via a ramp up to a certain height and then staircase. There is no guide facility available though you can ask locals for some basic info.

The premises are clean and there are washroom and water facilities at the base but not once you start ascending.

The temple is atop a small hill that must be climbed on foot. So this could be a bit steep for old people but the views atop are awesome.

It is recommended to take some snacks and water along and to reserve your energy while climbing since there are almost no major shops or restaurants nearby.

Thanks @Manu-B

I appreciate your observation about the similarity with the Indian parliament building in that the structure is circular with columns all around.

However, I’d like to differ since there is no mention in any reference related to the construction or design of the Indian parliament that it was inspired by the Ekattarso Mahadev Temple. Hence this argument holds little ground in my opinion.

With Regards,

Tushar

Isn’t there a dome on to the temple @TusharSuradkar ?
I understand that was the style being followed at many places to camouflage the structure.

Good observation @C_T

Here’s an aerial view of the temple.

I too did not notice a dome from near or from far.

Perhaps it was there in the past but never heard about it.

But I am curious to know about the camouflage thing if you could throw some light.
