Eating 面条 Chinese Noodles In The Hotpot

Chinese cuisine features various kinds of noodles, also special recipes like Biang Biang and Cheung Fun. Not only there are various kinds of noodles, but also various ways to eat them. You can even put your noodles in your hotpot. In the photo you can see raw noodles with herbs served at a hotpot restaurant. But how to eat them?

You have first of all to put the noodles in your pot. After they are cooked, pick them up and eat them. There’s nothing more to do, even if a common suggestion, in order to not get easily full with noodles, is to eat them st the end of the hotpot. Also you can usually choose among different types of noodles: my favorite ones are noodles with herbs, which are those in the picture.

Thank you for sharing, @user_not_found . Sometimes it feels like noodles have a whole universe of their own.

Personally, I’m most interested in the process of making and using them in recipes that put them in a completely different perspective from one another. What do you think is the most suitable recipe for herbs noodles?

@IrrPavlova honestly this particular kind of noodles (so noodles with herbs) seems not featured in particular recipes, with the exception of the classic noodles recipes you can find in Chinese restaurants everywhere, also Westernized ones (generally with vegetables, meat or shrimps, but in this case classic soy or rice noodles are more used). Noodles in general (so also those with herbs) may be also featured in noodles salad (which is a cold salad). Also noodles with soup are quite popular, but still talking about various kinds of noodles and not only those with herbs. I tend to prefer noodles with herbs and generally just eat them in the hotpot (also have spotted this kind of noodles just in a hotpot restaurant at this time), while my favorite hot noodle dishes feature different kind of noodles: Cheung Fun and Biangbiang with chili & soy sauce. They are very particular and regional too.

Hi again, @user_not_found .Thanks for the clarification. I’m also a herbs lover and always interested in recipes I wouldn’t think of myself. If I discover a recipe you might be interested I’ll gladly let you know in this thread.

@user_not_found the most interesting thing about noodles is they are the origin of pasta. If you ask anyone from where is the pasta, they will say in a 99% of the cases Italy… but pasta is Chinese, brought to Europe by Marco Polo.

@Johnny11 it is quite common to alter origin of food. This especially happens when pride overcomes reality (and let’s face it, Italian people are proud of everything but this is not a negative aspect, as long as we make a difference among Italians who are proud of their food but don’t think to be better than the rest of the world and those who think this - this rule obviously applies to every country). When we say “dumplings” the first thing we think about are Chinese dumplings even if Italy also features “ravioli” (and some people believe “ravioli” are an exclusive of Italy and not something inspired from Chinese tradition of dumplings). If I am not wrong, also other countries have something similar to dumplings, but I’m not completely sure about this!

The same can be said of some American people who believe pizza has been created in New York (even if I don’t know how many Americans believe this, I have seen many of them know Neapolitan pizza so maybe those who believe original pizza is American are a minority).

What about rice cakes? For some people they are Chinese, for other people they are Koreans!

But let’s face it, coffee is even the king of these battles of origins: African and South American countries are the main areas where coffee is extracted. But some people say coffee is American, other ones will say Italy is the kingdom of coffee. There are various coffee recipes from different countries, and still coffee bean generally does not come from USA or Italy. At the end, everyone should appreciate the single recipes of the different countries without battling about who invented pasta, discovered coffee or something else. Italian pasta will always be Italian, Chinese noodles will always be Chinese, American pizza will always be American, Italian pizza Italian, Italian coffee will always be Italian and American coffee, American. Every country has the right to be proud of their specific recipes, not of “having invented the raw material”.
