Kolkata Metro Rail has started it’s first phase journey on Valentine’s Day , this year and I am fortunate to be passenger of memorable first day inaugural day ride.
Kolkata has started its first underground train journey in 1984. Now a fresh route has added in Kolkata connecting east and west part of city. After 10 years of construction work, the first phase of ride has started journey from 14th February 2020 (Friday) at 8 am. Subway authorities welcome passengers with a red rose at Sector V Metro station.
All coaches are Air conditioned and both in train and platform announcement system is nice. I see stations have accessibility features, toilets are wheel chair friendly. Google maps also have updated train info on maps. All platforms have glass wall automatic sliding doors to prevent suicide attempts.
All photos, videos were taken by my mobile camera.
In upcoming year this route will extend to run via Ganges river and I am looking forward to country’s first underwater train ride.

Hi @DrShaunak . Many many congratulations to you that your country has inaugurated a newly constructed metro rail. Also, I must pay a heartily thank you for sharing with us this memorial day of your life. I can imagine how excited you are, and you have to be.
The metro rail, as pictured by you, seems to be well designed and having all facilities for the comfort of the passengers. The thing that I like the most is the offering of red roses to the passengers for traveling on inaugural day, salute to the administration for such act of kindness and love. Secondly, it is a thing of satisfaction that the design has accessibility features as well.
I have traveled in metro in many of my country cities, but that differs as in most of our cities the metro comprises large buses, instead of a railway coaches. However, in Lahore, the orange line is going to be inaugurated soon, that is a kind of metro rail.

Congrats @DrShaunak on your city’s new metro route.
It looks nicer and cleaner than BART (no comments @PaulPavlinovich pls) or the NYC subway system.
Your metro reminds of Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok.
Cheers,

Congratulation on the new metro @DrShaunak , it looks great!
They really thought of everything here even accessibility, which is awesome!
I remember way back when we got a train running all the way from Aalborg to Copenhagen and they built it to run under the ocean instead of over the bridges. It was amazing back then but also a bit scary to know that we were under water.

Those trains look almost exactly like ours @DrShaunak - great that your local community has a new mass transit option.
@KarenVChin BART is just a little worn, I heard there is a new rolling stock program coming up so it’ll be shiny again soon like it was 20 years ago with the last new cars.
When did you experience NYC subway? My visits over the last couple of years have all been clean trains and mostly clean stations except for some of the oldest ones.

@PaulPavlinovich — Bart is worn both in the cars and the stations. They have been saying the 40 year old cars will be replaced for 10 years.
I have rode the newer ones and those are already “worn.”
NYC Subways and their stations are nowhere as nice or clean as what you can ride in Asia (China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok).
Cheers,
Karen
@MortenSI Thank you for sharing your story. I just saw the map for the distance, I am looking forward to traveling to this metro in the future.

A metro will make everything a lot easier @DrShaunak , and I’m sure you will like your new one very much.
Do they have any plans to expand it in the future?
