The Dwarka Baodi Stepwell is a medieval structure in the heart of the crowded Dwarka sub-urban area of Delhi. The stepwell has now dried out but is in tip-top condition and no part of it is broken off or in a damaged condition.
The Archeological Survey of India ASI has put nice fencing around the stepwell and also posted a security person with a neat little security cabin. The security person who also doubles up as a tour guide told that is it a Lodi era water harvesting method, so it easily dates back to 600 yr ago and some settlement from that period is also found nearby.
The stepwell is a hidden gem in Dwarka Sector 4 and although the place is correctly placed on Google Maps the nearest landmark is the Gangotri apartment if you are taking verbal directions.
The Baoli was lost in the time and was discovered when they started digging for constructing a basement for building a school. The Baori is not much deep and I could count 22 steps from the ground level down to the edge of the stepwell. Stepwells have typically been associated with temples in ancient India so it is also believed that there was a temple nearby that is not lost. But the ruins of the Loharehri village are still found nearby indicating there was also a temple nearby.
There is a huge parking lot outside the Baori stepwell though visitors are very few. So the security person normally locks the gate from inside and I had to call him outside and requested to open the gate for some time.
This visit reminded me of other step-wells in Delhi like the mysterious Gol Bavdi, Rajon ki Baori in Mehrauli, and the ancient stepwell in Old Fort Delhi.
