Preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India, a national reserve of India, this Dutch cemetery contains 45 Dutch graves. It was very active in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The oldest tomb here is that of Sir Cornelius Jung, who died at Chinsura in 1743. Some famous people like George Vernet, Daniel Overbeck, Gregorius Hercules were buried here.
The mausoleum occupies an area of about 7,400 square meters, and is surrounded by a high brick wall.
The type of architecture seen in the Dutch tombs of South India, the tombs and mausoleums here also follow the same architecture.
There are 24 Dutch tombs in the southern part of this huge site, which are of three types. Some are in the shape of pyramids, some are simple burial chambers, and some are in boxes.
Apart from the burial ground there is another form of this place. It’s a green tree. The trees were very old and tall. Most of these trees are cherry trees.
In 2019, Fani, the second cyclone of the season, formed on April 26. Fani became a very severe cyclonic storm on April 30, reaching the equivalent of Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, then made landfall in India, killing 89 people between Odisha and Bangladesh; Fani caused $8.1 billion in damage. Most of the trees have been uprooted. Many trees grow from the top. With this, the boundary wall collapsed and the tree fell.
New trees were planted again in 2020 after getting rid of the Corona epidemic. Again, this place is beautiful. Currently, it is one of the most visited places in the city.
