Dusi Canoe Marathon 2020: Day 1

The Dusi Canoe Marathon was held this past weekend, a 120km canoeing race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in South Africa through rural KwaZulu-Natal.

There are many roads that are not correctly mapped along the route of the race. I tried to correct what I could while I was there. On Day 1 I think I managed to add a bridge, and report 3 roads that were wrong or did not exist. At least it’s a start…

This is my highlights video from Day 1 of the race :canoe:

Hi @VickiPilcher thank you for sharing this event with us, I remember I promised to assist you but asked you to keep in touch. Another thing to do is to talk to the local government, the municipality, they are mostly involved when it comes to adding new roads and rivers. They work hand in hand with Google to do updates, as I mentioned before, you can do this as an individual but sometimes it does not get approved, while if is done on the government side it becomes easy and it gets approved mostly, unless there are mistakes.

Hi @Raphael-Mahumane

I didn’t realise local governments / municipalities were able to assist - and wouldn’t know how to get in touch with them. I tried to add numerous points for the race before it began but very few were approved. Apologies I didn’t keep in touch - since most points were not approved, I ran out of time and couldn’t complete the lists I’d planned to share before the race.

Are you able to assist with contacts who could help with map edits online? If I view satellite images of the areas I travelled to I could easily spot a few mistakes for correction (some of which I have already tried to correct).
