Kishori Mohanpal from Kumartuli, West Bengal, comes every year to Chennai 4 months ahead of Durga Puja for making these beautiful clay idols. Today visited Thakkar Baba Vidyalaya, T.Nagar where his team is working. Rows and rows of idols were getting ready.

Hi.
It seems Mr.Kishori Mohanpal has been successfully executing this divine and artistic task for over 3 decades. Saw some 12 or 15 artists working there under him. They bring everything with them, from clay to chumki (from Bengal). He is a sculptor. Try the following link:

Have seen this type of scultping with different raw materials. One with ‘sudhai’ lime mortar in Thanjavur, with cement in many places, - both cases mostly in temples; - with clay as seen in the Durga dolls, some with paper mache.
I remember I have posted ‘Sudhai’ sculptures long back in these columns or Google maps. Sorry my essay is becoming lengthy. Want to add some photos as reference. But later.
Best wishes.
