On my newsfeed over the weekend, I read about Mt Nyiragongo violently erupting outside of the Democratic Republic of Congo city Goma which then led to close to 100 earthquakes and aftershocks with another threat of the volcano erupting again.
We are doing very well apart from the stress after these tragedies.
By the way, the city of Goma, is a little further from the city of Bukavu where we live, we are certainly two neighboring provinces, but we are separated by the majestic Lac-Kivu. Thanks to that, we in Bukavu have been spared much too much!
We give thanks to God, our friends, acquaintances and families are doing well!
We are doing well, we live near Goma yes but we are up to 100km, we are living with multiple earthquakes, so the city of Goma has been evacuated and the victims live a difficult moment now.
Great to know that you are fine @Yannick_S , @Gloire_Congo , as we are all worried about the eruption and the earthquakes, and yesterday we were checking Maps to see your last contributions, a church, checking date and positions. Yes, this is how we track back silently our friends, but reading that you are doing well makes me feel much much better.
Jambo tena , @Gloire_Congo so happy to hear that you are safe. May the good Lord protect you and your families and for those who were affected may Allah have mercy upon them. @KarenVChin Ma’am thanks for sharing. It’s really good to keep in touch and checking on our fellow Local guides. Blessings
Thank goodness @Gloire_Congo@Yannick_S you two are safe and well. I was getting worried when you did not respond to me privately since you two are always on social . The news looks terrible for your area. I thought perhaps you lost power and the internet since you did not respond. My last step was to post here on Connect since I know you two are very active here.
I am calling @ErmesT a private detective with his online sleuthing and reassuring me you two were okay!
Can you feel the earthquakes where you are? Are earthquakes common in your area?
Of course, we are still on social but this last time, even before the eruption I had a problem with my phone, the screen was broken, I paid for another in less than a few weeks the battery has let go … worries ! That’s why me, I’m not too much on Social lately.
But for the earthquakes, it even happened to the city where we are, but of too small a magnitude.
But helping God, things are gradually getting back to normal, there are no more erthquakes and the panic among the population ceases.
@Yannick_S – I guess I need not to watch CNN anymore?! I am glad you are safe and your big issue is not having a working mobile, not the volcanic eruption or all of the earthquakes and aftershocks.
Being a member of this online Local Guides Community, we all have the opportunity to meet and get to know other Local Guides from all corners of the world. I hope you have made some Local Guides friends here on Connect!
I am personally amazed I have been able to meet and know Local Guides from Africa, in particular the lesser known countries, like the DR Congo, from an American perspective.
I live in “earthquake country” - California, the West Coast of the United States and was taught as a child in school about what to do if there is an earthquake.
I have experienced many earthquakes in my life. The largest was in 1989 at 6.9 which I have never forgot.
@Mbasha – thanks for responding! It is good to know you and your family’s relatives are okay. 2020-2021 have not been great so far. There are just 6 months left of 2021. Things have to get better, right??
My family (the adults), including me, have been vaccinated. No one I know in my family or friends in the US tested positive, got sick, or died from COVID. We are very blessed and fortunate.
For us here in Africa , people are still believe in fakenews about the vaccine and it slows the process down but we trust that everything will be okay very soon.
Hi @KarenVChin ; our dear beautiful country the DRC is going through a critical moment at the moment and especially the city of Goma with volcanic eruptions
But since not everyone was in Goma, we thank God for protection. me and my family and especially my Local Guide DRC community are all fine.
Thank you for thinking of us
In our Local community, and in the entire DRC, Local Guides are not much on #Connect which means that there are too few of us reacting to the content of the DRC.
Some say it’s because of the lack of a good internet connection, others say Connect is tooo complicated
And it’s true, but I’m already used to living with it like that!
But we’re fighting a lot to have our entire community represented here on Connect.
