Overnight my photo view has changed to double column with small photos. Is this a change from GM or a glitch?

It is not a bug but most likely a new layout rolling out. I see it too.
It gives a problem if you want to read the number of views. Then you need to turn your device to horizontal view to see the entire number.

I think I have a solution for you.
Instead of browsing your photos in the two columns mode, I suggest that you click on one of them, and the swipe left to browse them. This gives you a bigger version and more readable text.
It works great for me. And I don’t think we have lost anything with the new layout.

PS you do need to return to the two column view for each batch of 20 pics to prompt the download of the next 20 photos.
