You are not required to do anything. Update the app on the phone & then you will see the new options.
Nevertheless, there are two possibilities for why the “followers” tab is not visible on your profile.
You have chosen to lock your profile. Any would-be follower would need your permission & once approved you can see that. Try removing the lock & refresh.
If you do not see the option still, then the update is yet to be extended in your region. As per my earlier experience, I received the refreshed UI after about a week from the date of launch.

You don’t need to do anything special to activate the following option on your map profile. At the moment, the following option is being rolled out by Google and at such, some account are yet to have the enable button. I fall under the category of those waiting for the following.
Not withstanding, you can update your map and make sure your privacy setting is not turned on, if be turned on, you may not have the following button, so I advice you first make sure your app is updated, then check your setting and make sure you are visible to business and privacy is turn off.

So long as the tablet runs the Android Maps, the type of device doesn’t make any difference in the behaviour of the app.
