Do news articles on restaurant closings not count?

This is something I’ve struggled with lately. Our local newspaper reports a restaurant closing, including dates, and I use a screenshot of the article for support when I mark the restaurant closed in Maps. But twice, these have been rejected. Why is that?

@JebH if that restaurant has already been claimed by the owner, only they can edit details. Even information like closing down or closed or moved can only be made by the owner alone. So, there is nothing much you can do about it.

You’ve posted your question under the Food & DrinkTopic @JebH however I suggest that if you move it to theHow-tos Topic you will likely get a better response and it will be more helpful to other Local Guides there.

My suggestion is always to be on site, while editing a place as closed, @JebH

Normally Google ask for a photo, while you are submitting the edit, where you can see the place, not an article of a local newspaper.

I have closed several places in this way, with no issues.

If the business is claimed, you should contact my-business community, as indicated by @Shafak , for reporting the closure. Many times a business owner do not close the listing when they close the activity, and this can be an issue for the new owner.

As indicated by @AdamGT , the right place for your post is “how to

Hi @JebH ,

Thanks for your question about a business place that could be marked as closed on Google Maps.

Please keep in mind that if the business place is claimed on Google Maps as a part of the Google My Business platform the owner would be able to make changes and mark their business as permanently closed.

I’m going to move your post to the How-tos section where all Local Guides usually post their questions.

Thanks @Shafak and @ErmesT for your help here.
