Diwali Festival - The festival of lights

Today I want to share about the Indian festival Diwali and how Diwali is celebrated in West Bengal. But before let me tell you what is Diwali Festival.

Diwali is widely celebrated all over the India. The main symbols are victory of light over the darkness and the triumph of good power over the evil power. The festival is second major festival in our country.

Diwali begins just before the arrival of a new moon. The festival is occurred on no-moon night. According to the Bengali calender the festival is held on the bengali months Ashvin(āĻ†āĻļā§āĻŦāĻŋāĻ¨) and Kartika(āĻ•āĻžāĻ°ā§āĻ¤āĻŋāĻ•) between mid-September and mid-November and according to the Bengali date Chaturdashi Tithi(āĻšāĻ¤ā§āĻ°ā§āĻĻāĻļā§€ āĻ¤āĻŋāĻĨāĻŋ) . This year the festival has been started from 12th November.

This Diwali festival is called by another name. The name is " Festival of Lights". This festival is celebrated all over India by bursting crackers and fireworks. There are bright lights all over the whole country at the time of Diwali festival.

Every houses are kept clean and decorated. The houses are decorated with different colouring flowers and Rangolis. Rangoli is known as “Alpana” (āĻ†āĻ˛āĻĒāĻ¨āĻž) in West Bengal. Every house and street is decorated with different coloured lights. Clay lamps and candles are placed in every house and street. Clay lamps are called Diya or in Bengali word “prodip” (āĻĒā§āĻ°āĻĻā§€āĻĒ). Diwali is mainly celebrated lineup brightly burning clay lamps and candles outside our homes. So lighting of clay lamps and candles is a major ritual in Diwali. There are bright lights all over the whole country during Diwali. Since it is a festival of lights, So the purpose of this festival of lights is to illuminate the dark no moon night with light. During this festival all Indians worship and offer prayers to various gods and goddesses.

In West Bengal, we celebrate this festival as Kali Puja(āĻ•āĻžāĻ˛ā§€āĻĒā§‚āĻœāĻž) which is held 19 days after the end of Durga Puja Festival . Now know who is Kali. Goddess Kali the Goddess of strength who protect the humanity from the hands of evils, is another form of Goddess Durga. In this festival we worship Goddess Kali, another form of Goddess Durga. Late night worshipping is held on the night of this festival. Various beautiful Pandals are made for Kali Puja. Various beautiful and colourful rangolis are drawn in those pandals. The pandals are decorated with colourful lights, flowers. Streets are full of lights. So in West Bengal, Diwali festival means worshipping Goddess Kali which is known as Kali Puja Festival.

In our West Bengal, we have a ritual of lighting clay lamps. In our West Bengal, during this festival we light total 14 clay lamps. We light these 14 clay lamps for our 14 ancestors. We believe that the night of Diwali is the night of our 14 ancestors. These 14 clay lamps are lit in our homes to guide their souls to heaven. We pray for them. Every family follow this custom. These clay lamps signify the hope and victory of lights.

Idols of Goddess Kali are brought and worshiped in every pandal. Many people worship Goddess Kali in their home. We wear new dresses. We give each other various gifts. Family and relatives all come together. We visit different pandals together with family, relatives and friends. Eat various delicious foods and sweets, burst firecrackers and indulge in joyous festivities. We celebrate this festival for two days in West Bengal.

Here I have given some name sweets which we eat on Diwali : Rosogolla, Rosmalai, Sandesh, Kalakand, Gulab Jamun, Barfi, Kheer, Laddu, Chanar Payes etc.

The major themes of Diwali are family gatherings, charitable giving, fireworks, lights, prayers, offerings and feasts. This night is the darkest night as there is no moon. By removing this darkest night we illuminate this night with lights.

@Tandrima2 Thank you for tagging me in your post. Your post and photos are excellent, shows you have lot of knowledge on traditions. I found interesting distinctions between Andhra and West Bengal customs. I am sharing some of them here, while in West Bengal, you said here, the pandals of the Kali festival are decorated during Diwali, here in Andhra, the pandals utilized for the Kali festival are taken down and not used for Diwali celebrations. Additionally, the types of sweets prepared in Andhra different compared to those in West Bengal.
