Back in 2021, I embarked on an invigorating one-day journey to Port Said, Egypt, a voyage of discovery alongside a fellow traveler who shared my zest for exploring new horizons. This brief but memorable expedition was aimed at uncovering the cultural and architectural wonders of this historic city, with the Islamic Complex Mosque in Port Fouad as our primary point of interest.
The day began with the excitement of setting foot in Port Said, a city where the past and present coexist in a vibrant tapestry. Our anticipation was palpable as we navigated through the bustling streets, each turn revealing facets of the city’s rich heritage and modern dynamism.
Upon reaching the Islamic Complex Mosque in Port Fouad, we were immediately captivated by its architectural splendor. Designed by the esteemed Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy, the mosque was a testament to the harmony of traditional Islamic design and innovative construction methods.
The grand central dome, flanked by four smaller ones, was not just an architectural feature but a symbol of the spiritual magnitude of this place.
Inside, the mosque was a realm of tranquility and artistic mastery. The walls, adorned with intricate geometric patterns and calligraphy, seemed to whisper stories of ancient wisdom and devotion. The space, capable of hosting 2,000 worshippers, felt both grandiose and intimate, a sanctuary for collective prayer and personal reflection.
Exploring further, we were struck by the mosque’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The choice of natural materials like mud brick, wood, and stone highlighted a deep respect for nature, while features like natural ventilation and passive cooling showcased the mosque’s ecological mindfulness.
The broader Islamic Complex, with its library, cultural center, and religious school, stood as a vibrant community hub, echoing intellectual and spiritual discourse. Our experience in Port Said, though brief, was profoundly enriching. It deepened our appreciation for Egypt’s architectural heritage and its seamless blend of the past with the present.
As the day concluded and we bid farewell to Port Fouad, the Islamic Complex Mosque remained a highlight of our journey. This visit in 2021 not only broadened our understanding of Islamic art and architecture but also left us with a lasting impression of the cultural and spiritual essence of Port Said, a memory cherished to this day.
