Hey Guides!
Today, I’d like to share a little piece of Cambodian culture that always brings smiles and energy to our communities: Chhai Yam Dance (Robam Chhai Yam / របាំឆៃយាំ).
Whenever I see a Chhai Yam performance, what catches my attention first is the sound of the drums. The energetic rhythm, funny dancing, colourful costumes and playful characters quickly create a joyful atmosphere.
Chhai Yam is often performed during Khmer New Year, Buddhist ceremonies, Bon Pka, and religious processions. The performers can lead the procession to the pagoda while people bring offerings and donations.
I especially enjoy the humorous side of the performance. The dancers make funny facial expressions, exaggerated movements and playful gestures while playing their drums. Sometimes we can also see giant and monkey characters dancing and interacting with people along the way.
For me, Chhai Yam is more than entertainment. It is a way for people to celebrate together, share happiness and keep Khmer traditions alive.
As a local guide, I love discovering and sharing these cultural moments because they show another side of Cambodia, not only our famous places and food but also the living traditions and community spirit behind them.
