Ghana is a developing country in West Sub Saharan Africa. As a middle income country, development across the country is gradually picking up and people are creating amazing concepts and great places. Multi purpose buildings are rapidly springing up especially in Accra, the capital. It is a common sight to see a 3-5 storey building that houses banks, restaurants, night clubs, open terrace bars, theatres, and other social facilities. However, little to no consideration is often times given to disabled and their challenges to access such places in this development space.
Having lived with people who wheel chair bound, I have witnessed first hand the struggles disabled people face in accessing facilities. Most disabled people are without any social life due to the hazards and complexities in navigating their way through places without thought or concern to accessibility for the disabled in our part of the world.
My first concern with every place/ facility I visit is to look for disable friendly amenities and options. This is quite eminent in my reviews of the places I visit. I love to review places with their disability friendly options so as to give options to other disabled people. I love being a local guide knowing very well, my disability access reviews of facilities is opening up options and conveying a message to the disabled in Ghana that, Disability is not inability. That the disabled in Ghana can have a social life. There are always places they can go to and there are facilities that have been constructed with them in mind.
