From the past many years, I have been reviewing places in my community and in almost all my reviews I emphasize on whether these reviewed places offers reserved parking space for disabled drivers and if it has access for them. The following are my findings after noticing this many places:
-
In almost all places, placards are placed with a figurative mark illustrating the parking space reserved for disabled drivers.
-
The local government authority, issues a car sticker for disabled drivers which authorizes them to park their cars in the reserved spots.
-
There is a fine for unauthorized drivers with no disability stickers occupying the reserved parking slots. In most of the cases, the traffic police have the right to towed the car and take legal action against the violators.
-
I saw only few parking spaces reserved in big parking lots of malls, parks, beaches. For example, in an exhibition building which has a big parking lot with a parking capacity of approximately 500 cars I saw only 3 spots reserved for the disabled drivers, that too located very far from the building access.
Iam planning to compile a list of the reserved parking spaces in my community which shall be shared with the concerned traffic department. I will request the department to create an information flyer with all the disabled parking locations and share them with the disabled drivers through electronic media and printed copies. Additionally, I will request the concerned traffic department to increase the number of reserved spots for the disabled drivers and locate them within close proximity to the access of the buildings.
