Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month is quite a new commemoration to celebrate persons with disabilities. The month of July was chosen because it aligns with the month Americans with Disabilities Act was passed into law in the United States of America.

Disability Pride is defined as “accepting and honoring each person’s uniqueness and seeing it as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity”

Disability Pride movement encourages PwDs to be proudly visible in their communities without fear of being stigmatized.

The event features various activities like parades, sports, conferences, workshops and meet-ups to share experiences.

Do you know of any Disability Pride event in your community? How are you helping special citizens to become proud members of the society?

One way Local Guides can help make Disability Pride Month a success is to write reviews, add photos and add places with accessible features on Google Maps. Hosting an accessibility meet-up will also create more awareness and help enthusiasts learn how to add such useful I formation on the maps.

Remember if we can help more people make decisions to move around without barriers using Google Maps, we are giving them confidence and independence to be proud of their abilities.
