Did Google stop adding categories? No: here are some brand new ones!

The pace of my “new catgories” posts here on Connect is typically once every 2-3 months or so. And that pace simply depends on the availability of new categories, which I check from time to time to see if the number of new entries is worth reporting on. So, with the previous post containing a list of newly added categories now dating back to August 2021 (with a small update in September) you might start to wonder “Did Google stop adding categories?”.

The answer is obviously no, as this is the next post in the series

But the number of new categories is clearly quite limited compared to what we saw e.g. early 2021, when 46 categories were added with another 25 following a mere month later. Today’s list is much shorter, with only 9 entries (and not all of them available in most languages):

Arab restaurant
Cupra dealer
Dumpster rental service
Funeral celebrant service
General education school
Scenography company
Secondary school
Space of remembrance
Vehicle wrapping service

The last one on the list was already published in November 2021 and I actually covered that in a separate post already. Some others could be referred to as ‘business as usual’: another restaurant type (Arab restaurant) and another branded car dealer (Cupra dealer - Cupra used to be known as SEAT Sport). We’ve seen those types of categories being added frequently in the past couple of years (you can find the links to all posts decribing this in detail in the overview post). Quite useful, if you ask me, are Dumpster rental service (Iin my area there definitely are some businesses who have this as their main activity) and Funeral celebrant service (as more and more funerals are now taking place in a non-religious setting).

I’m not sure what to think of Scenography company. Scenography is the design and painting of theatrical scenery and I really wonder if that much companies are doing this to justify adding a category for it on Maps. Please do add your feedback in the comments if you can shed some extra light here. What could be a very useful one is Space of remembrance, but unfortunately it is not available in any other language, so most of us will need to keep using the translated equivalent of Heritage preservation or Cultural landmark.

And then there are the two education-related catergories: Secondary school and General education school. You might think “Surely we had those already?”. The answer there is both yes and no. “Secondary school” was already there as the international English term for the US English Middle school, but this newly added one is actually Secondary school in the US English list with no entry in the international English list - which is also the case for the category Primary school. Perhaps this is connected to the way the educational system is organized in Germany, as the new category does have a German translation (Weiterführende Schule) - I will have to dig deeper into the entire education category situation and then write a post on it in the Categories Explained (?) series, which deals with confusing (use of) categories.

Thank you @JanVanHaver

You know one of the most amazing posts on Connect are your notifications about categories. Really like these series.

These new categories are also good ones.

Hi @JanVanHaver

I just added the Scenography Company category to 11 businesses in Denmark. Only one of them went pending.

Cheers

Morten

I’m unsure how to translate the “Company” part of the name into Danish since most are actually 1-man businesses.

@Amiran great to hear that!

@MortenCopenhagen can you share link to a few of those? It might help me figure out what to look for to also apply it over here.

When using Danish in the Android app I can select the new category untranslated from the Danish list of categories. But the first link above shows “Supplier of building materials” as the category, but Scenography Company while the language is set to English. Hmmmn.

Now that’s interesting/intruiging @MortenCopenhagen . As the new category was only added recently the POI must have had another category in English too - most likely Supplier of building materials indeed.

The behaviour I had witnessed so far for POIs that get changed to a category which is available in English but not in the local language is that the category field just gets blanked out (which is obviously not a good thing, and also the resaon why I am always hestitant to changec the category to something which does not have a local language versiion). This behaviour - the old category on display in the local language if no translation for the new one is avaialble - is something I have not seen before.

Let me check if I can find/create other cases.

@JanVanHaver

I can confirm that the other places that were approved now have no category visible while app language is set to Danish.

Thx for that addtional feedback @MortenCopenhagen - I will try to do some targeted testing in the next few days.

@MortenCopenhagen (or anyone else using Maps in aonother language than English) please check this POI https://goo.gl/maps/vZhyMhKn5sT2khAC8 and let me know what you get to see as category with the Maps app interface in your local language. For me, this is the only place so far where I can still see the English category name “Scenography company” even when using the interface in my local language (or in Czech for that matter, I tested that too). I also checked if that particular new category happened to be available in Czech, and it is not.

Furthermore, I have also come across 1 POI where I changed the category to Scenography company, but that still shows the Dutch category it used to have (Artist) when viewing it with the interface in Dutch.

Final interesting factoid: on Android, opening POIs that have been changed to Scenography company with the interface in Dutch sometimes shows “Point of interest” (in English) for a brief moment before removing the category field from the screen (thereby causing the rest of the screen below the POI name to move slightly upward).

Hi @JanVanHaver

While using Danish on my Desktop this is the name and category mentioned:

Scenography International S.r.o.
Scenography company

So there is a fallback into English.
