Devastating Floods

Floods!

During most of the rainy seasons, many areas where the towns and habitats are situated on the riverside are badly hit or affected due to heavy rains or heavy floods in the river due to different reasons are creating havoc on both the banks of river, destroying many lives of humans and livestock, properties, fields and everything coming in the way.

My childhood passed on the bank of a major river called as “Godavari” I have seen the destructions caused during and after the floods from very near. My close relative was a senior officer in government and was looking after the relief works. I had travelled with him many times to such rescue operation locations. Whenever I see the news and pictures of such happenings, I remember the group of the people standing helplessly on some elevated piece of land, the cows and buffalos lying dead in the mud, destroyed houses and what not…

My heart gets shaken every such time by realizing the pain of these people who lost all of their life time savings and earnings. The house which they built by doing lots of hard work and savings, getting washed out in front of their eyes and they can do nothing. I remember an old person who was sitting with empty eyes near his fallen house due to flood and heavy rains, full of mud and everything in the house was just flown away. Now he don’t have even spoon or a single utensil to eat… OMG even now also I feel shivering on my skin…

Businessmen and traders in the market area gets badly hit by such happenings. If they are able to save some of the things from their shops then bit okay but those who can not? Total loss! Groceries you have to simply throw, cloths are absolutely not usable. The layer of mud, the flood left behind is waist deep and it is extremely exhaustive to clean all this. How can they do that ? who will help them? All are affected. its really a helpless situation. Of course lots of help in form of food, cloths, medicines etc starts flowing in but all that is random and for that time being only. Three days four days a fortnight… what after that? from where to start? what to feed the children? from where? how? From where the money will flow in? It’s fine for those who are doing some regular job in government or so they may get some timely funds for sure… but what the businessmen will do? how one can beg to relatives and friends? how much? Its really a mammoth task to stand again to begin a new life…

The water keeps on flowing due to heavy rains, due to other rivers pouring in main river, due to the water release from the dams and the devastation continues. many times situation is you are lifted from rooftop to some other place and you don’t know at all what is happening to the property underwater. What about valuables and important papers in house? electronic gadgets? People taken shelter at the upper floor, not sure if their building will sustain?

Simply horrible. I always try to be a part of the relief/rescue operations in some or other way. If not at least by the way of donations. Just tried to put the pain of the affected people here. Request you all to understand the same and always come ahead. Be always ready to assist the affected people. What you give will come back to you again in multiple in different ways for sure.

Thank you for your post @Dilip-the-friend . Yes indeed the floods are terrible. So much devastation! So many impacted people and businesses and so much loss. I heard about one business in particular that really broke my heart. It was an antique bookseller with books from 15th century, all destroyed!!! It’s the kind of bookstore that I love visiting, and I just love browsing through old books. It seems to take me back in time! The once quiet river destroyed all the store’s beautiful antique books and manuscripts and of course, the livelihood of the owner, gone, all destroyed! So sad :disappointed:

Hi @CAAG1959 yes. During and after flood the things are very bad and heart breaking. Thanks for your sentiments. These are natural calamities and we are certainly not able to stop it. Just keep on doing some assistance, help and good work to wipe out the tears of affected.

Hi @AdamGT You rightly said it. For many people it’s just not a trading or a business just to earn money. It is a passion for them. My one friend is having a shop where he sells all utensils, pots and different idols, statues etc… Slowly he developed interest in collection of old statues and metal things of artistic and traditional value… Slowly he had a good valuable collection which he preserved with a lots of love and investment to keep them in good condition. During one calamity of heavy rains and floods his shop came down. Many valuables just flown away. He was so unhappy and heart broken as the collection was beyond any value for him…

Alas… natural calamities… The human is so small in front of nature…
