[DEEP JAPAN] A huge Japanese art Sendai Tanabata Festival

(Sendai Tanabata Festival in 2019 @YasumiKikuchi )

Japan’s largest festival in Sendai, Miyagi

How beautiful it is!! You can enjoy a large-scale art as much as Japanese decorations for free in early August.

The Sendai Tanabata Festival in 2019 attracted 2.25 million people in three days. Moreover, it is a festival that is not well known by foreign tourists. This number is the largest after the Hakata Dontaku Festival and Hamamatsu Festival:dolls::wind_chime:.

It comes from a story set in the Milky Way in China. Therefore, it is originally the solar calendar in Japan, but it is celebrated with the lunar calendar.

Traditional Japanese decorations are gathered

The Sendai Tanabata Festival is the quietest of all major Japanese festivals. We enjoy watching the streets overflowing with huge decorations of Japanese Yuzen paper created by companies and shopping streets. The distance takes place on Atrium Street, which covers 1.3 km.

400 years of festivals for women and children

When did it start? This began 400 years before Sendai was built. This is a women’s festival that was started by the general Shogun Date Masamune (famous worldwide for being a model of Star Wars Darth Vader) to encourage women to participate in society. Gender initiatives have already been undertaken for 400 years:woman::boy:.

Japanese politeness is proven

Surprisingly, the decoration does not break slightly. No one will break it. If you can speak Japanese, please listen to the parents and children on the street. You will find that they are educating their children on the spot, “Do not touch decorations made by others”. In other words, it is an educational practice👨‍👨‍👧‍👦.

The Japanese summer festival will surely touch your heartstrings. You should aim for summer Japan:parasol_on_ground::japan:!!

Of course, you should also eat traditional Japanese Shaved Ice that lasts for 1200 years🍧!

You can read last year’s festival in the comments section of the post below.

Hi @YasumiKikuchi . Thank you so much for sharing this colorful piece of joy with the community! I love the decorations and the whole gender equality theme that inspires the festival. Is it just a one-day event or do you get to enjoy the beautiful decorations longer?

Long time no see @IrrPavlova
I was too busy and temporarily stopped the series, but will continue in the future.

This festival will be held for 3 days. It is the second largest in Japan in terms of the number of daily mobilizations and the total of three days. In other words, it is the largest in Japan when both are considered. The Tanabata Festival takes place all over Japan, but only Sendai has become so large for gender equality and postwar reconstruction.

I’m happy to know you are continuing the series, @YasumiKikuchi . Thank you for the details. I’m really considering planning a Japan visit in the summertime at some point because of it.

I look forward to coming to Japan @IrrPavlova
At that time, please ask me and Japan Local Guides. There are many types of summer festivals in Japan as well.

Thank you for viewing @AdamGT
Many Japanese summer festivals between cherry blossoms and autumn leaves often have color as the theme. Fireworks fill the space between the colorful spring and autumn.

Colors! Colors, so many colors! @YasumiKikuchi

I Can only imagine how amazing it would be to walk along these multi-colored paper formations. Do they sell it too?

Interesting to see the Local Guide Badge emerging in the pictures.

Yes @ReemaGandhi , Colors, colors, Japan colors😆!!

Sendai Tanabata is a chance to see almost all of the unique colors of Japan. Scientifically, there is a unique atmosphere because the Western color scheme and the Japanese color scheme are different. Sendai Tanabata decorations will be recycled, but you can easily get products named “Origami”, “Japanese paper”, “Yuzen paper” and “Sliding paper”.

You will eventually have the opportunity to get Pegman. Let’s #findpegman together😆

@YasumiKikuchi Thank you for sharing these amazing pics. Reminds of when I was in Chigasaki during Tanabata.

The history lesson of this event is good. Did you try the Zunda Mochi? I think you had some on top of the shaved ice…?

Hello @user_not_found Thank you for reading!
You are familiar with Chigasaki’s Tanabata. Large-scale Japanese festivals are often developed in the hope of recovering from wars and disasters.
I’m a local person, so I usually eat Zunda Mochi. In fact, it can be said to be an everyday snack. There’s Zunda and ice cream on that shaved ice🍧
