Dealing with False Deletions

I have been working for a long time to supplement the English information on landmarks in Kyoto and Nara that is lacking in Google Maps, primarily for foreign tourists visiting those areas. However, a specific user who dislikes my edits has repeatedly submitted false deletion requests, and despite sending feedback to Google, they have not addressed the issue. That’s why I am reaching out to the Local Guides, who are Googlers, for help for the first time.

Initially, I noticed that there was very little English translation of information within temple grounds, and even when translated, the information was not accurate. So, I started actively editing the maps. I have access to specialized literature published by temples and local authorities, which allows me to improve the accuracy of the information.

Gradually, I discovered that some temple buildings had the temple name included in their name field, while others had it omitted. To improve this, I standardized all of them to include the official names and provided English translations. For example, it became “Horyu-ji Kondo (Golden Hall).”

However, soon after that, certain users, who are believed to be individuals from Japan and only edit in Japanese, started changing it back to simply “金堂” (which means “Golden Hall” in Japanese). Since they only edit in Japanese, it is easy to identify who made the edits. If it were merely a difference in opinion, it wouldn’t be a problem. However, they also started submitting deletion requests for the additional information about temple buildings that were missing on the map. For example, they claimed that the six National Treasure buildings in Ninomaru Palace of Nijo Castle or the information about the pond and buildings in Nishi Honganji were duplicate or non-existent sites. These are clearly false claims and acts of vandalizing the map. Furthermore, several hundred (or even thousands) of photos and reviews posted by users for iconic landmarks like Toshodai-ji Kondo (Golden Hall) or Byodo-in Hoodo (Phoenix Hall) have been deleted for each location. These tragedies are a result of Google’s flawed system that approves false reports from malicious users.

I admit that I made a mistake while translating Google Maps, where I mistakenly removed long URLs to inn booking sites, thinking they were malicious affiliate links. Shortly after that, Google made improvements to prevent general users like me from editing information that only business owners can add. As a result, they permanently removed me as a Local Guide, even though I had never participated as one. This completely cut off any means of seeking help, and I have been subjected to harassment for a long time. In other words, even this account is destined to be deleted.

That was a brief explanation. You can choose to ignore me or report me as an illegitimate user. However, if you believe that I am genuinely working to make Google Maps a better place, then I would appreciate it if you could do the right thing.

Hi @ds2023may

Long post but I’m still not sure if you have been making the translations correctly.

Places on Google Maps has a name field for each possible language. Depending on the language settings on your device and in the Maps app you will see (and have access to edit) the name in 1, 2 or 3 languages. So if you don’t see the specific language you want to edit you need to change some of your settings.

Adding the name in two different languages in one field is not okay.

If you want further help then please share a few screenshots.

Also, it is practically impossible to know who have been reversing your edits. How did you determine who have been undoing your edits?

All the best

Morten

Thanks for your reply, @MortenCopenhagen

The screenshot attached will prove whether my editing is legitimate or not.

Now let me explain in detail the evidence I have that suggests the user responsible for deleting the posts is a specific individual. For example, when I corrected the building names of several cultural assets at Nishi Hongan-ji Temple and restored information on sites that had been removed (”Black Study”, etc.), most of the changes were immediately auto-approved and reflected on Maps, except for a few locations. However, the next day, everything was reverted back. These occurrences are not limited to Nishi Honganji Temple but happen at temples throughout Kyoto. It is unlikely that multiple users coincidentally engage in exactly the same actions.

Certainly, the editing and deletion requests are carried out anonymously, and it is unclear who is behind them. I, too, have no clue about the identity of the user. However, it is certain that the temple administrators are not involved in these activities as part of their duties. They can full control over the name changes. I hope this information helps with understanding the situation.

@ds2023may

Thanks for your screenshot. It looks great. No issues there.

I have made several thousands edits and I have never encountered what you are describing here. I suspect that what you think is a human could easily be the spam filter at work.

Why are you reaching out here on Connect using level 1 account? Something does not add up. If you created a second account because your original account was suspended, this is not in line with the guidelines. Kindly explain.

Cheers

Morten

Many thanks, @MortenCopenhagen

It is possible that the spam filter may be at work.

However, based on my experience over the past year, I believe the likelihood of that is low. The spam filter operates consistently and does not reflect in Maps even for a moment. It is also unlikely to delete information about global landmarks along with reviews.

As I have already explained, I believe the reason for my account being banned from the Local Guides community was mistakenly removing long URLs to hotel booking sites, assuming they were malicious affiliate links.

Since Google does not disclose the reasons, this is just speculation.

I wrote along tutorial for Suspended local guides.

It is called How to Get In and Out of Trouble as a Local Guide.

It is not your account but you that got suspended. Please leave the Local Guides Program with thus second profile.

I have shared some tips on how best to leave the Local Guides Program here. It will help you understand the consequences and select which leave method is best for you.

In the Suspension tutorial you can learn how to reach the Local Guides team via the appeals form. Creating a second account will create further problems.

Best of luck
Morten

Unfortunately, Google has permanently banned me for unknown reasons. Even when I raise objections, they only send template emails. You might believe that Google could never make such a significant mistake and that I must have maliciously done something wrong. However, that is not true. I want to prove this.

If you think of me as someone fighting against spam filters, I would like you to add the White Study to Nijo Castle as shown in the screenshot below. It should be reflected on the map immediately. Please observe it for a few days. The problematic user will file a false removal request, claiming that it doesn’t exist, and it will undoubtedly be accepted.

This site has been designated a National Treasure by the Japanese government as shown in the link below and is a major landmark in Kyoto. After I began to align the disparate names, the site was brought to my attention by a malicious user, and numerous reviews and photos were removed from the site.

kunishitei.bunka.go.jp/heritage/detail/102/1706

If you believe that by doing this, you may face unwarranted suspicion from Google and your account might be banned, please act according to your convictions.

Furthermore, while these incidents happen promptly on Kyoto’s sites, it takes several weeks for temple sites in Nara to be deleted. This serves as evidence that it is not the work of bots but rather malicious users fixating on Kyoto’s landmarks.

I believe there are many Googlers on Local Guides Connect. However, is it not realistic to ask them for investigation and intervention? I want to seek justice from them.

Best,

D

The following landmarks have recently been added to Maps, so there are very few reviews. This is because false deletion requests were submitted by malicious users and were approved, resulting in the reset of all data for several years.

Chion-in Sammon Gate

Byodo-in Hoodo (Phoenix Hall)

Furthermore, the landmark constructed in the 8th century below is not registered as a building. This is because it was deleted and the request for re-registration was not approved.

Toshodai-ji Kondo (Golden Hall)

MQGM+6W9 Nara

The destruction of such maps is not an acceptable act, but in reality, the system continues to approve it. To stop this, the intervention of conscientious individuals is necessary.

Hi @DK2023May ,

I see you created one more account. Actively participating in Local Guides with more than one account is against our rules and policy. Doing so will result in the removal of one if not all accounts and may result in a permanent ban from the Local Guides program. As mentioned above too, we recommend that you exit the program on your newly created one and fill in the appeal form for your initial account to be reviewed.

As for the edits you suggest for places please know that the Google algorithms analyze different factors, such as the information submitted, the location of the input, your mapping activity, and other factors to make sure everything added to the map is accurate and follows our guidelines.

Hi @MashaPS ,

Thank you your reply.

For a year, I tried to find another way, but I had to recreate my account because I didn’t see any other way.

Imagine what you would do if you were punished for a crime you did not commit and had no way to contact your family, lawyer or the people.

I believe you can do the right thing.

Best,

D

I have tried your suggested method multiple times, but they didn’t do it correctly.

It’s just like when using Google Maps to navigate to Horyu-ji Temple, I am instructed to get off several stops before the temple’s bus stop and walk from there. This is due to the incorrect fixed location of Horyu-ji Temple in their database. But they have rejected my suggestion, and continue to inconvenience tourists today.

You must doubt the system. And please don’t be a bureaucrat.

Remember, how one soldier suspected a false alarm of a nuclear missile launch and saved humanity.

Best,

D
