Namaste fellow Local Guides!
Dreaming of escaping the heat and immersing yourself in breathtaking mountain scenery? Look no further than Darjeeling! This “Queen of the Hills” is absolutely enchanting in April, with pleasant weather, blooming rhododendrons, and clear views of the majestic Kanchenjunga.
Inspired by a recent reel I saw showcasing the beauty of Darjeeling (and reminiscing about my own wonderful trips!)
I wanted to share some essential tips for planning your visit this April:
How to Reach Darjeeling:
- By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), about 90 km away. Several major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati have direct flights. From the airport, you can hire a taxi (approx. 2.5-3 hours) or take a shared jeep to Darjeeling. Pre-paid taxi services are also available.
- By Rail: The closest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), around 88 km from Darjeeling. NJP has excellent connectivity with major Indian cities. From NJP, you have several options:
- Taxi/Shared Jeep: These are readily available and take about 3-4 hours.
- Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train): Experience a UNESCO World Heritage journey on this charming narrow-gauge railway. The ride is scenic but slower, taking around 7-8 hours. Book your tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
- By Road: Darjeeling is well-connected by road to Siliguri (77 km), which is a major transportation hub. You can take buses (state-run and private) from the Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand in Siliguri. Shared jeeps are a faster, more common option for the hilly terrain.
