Dancing with water and wind - Santa Croce lake

Hi Local Guides

Today I want to take you with me to a particular place in my region: the lake of Santa Croce.

A small, semi-artificial lake, at the entrance to the Alps, in the past known above all because cars passed by to reach the Dolomites. A lake which, like many small alpine lakes, is closed downstream by a dam. A basin of water that served, and still does, to produce electricity. Water that passes from one lake to another, up to the valley, feeds hydroelectric generators, which for decades have been the only source of electricity in my region.

Next to the lake, a campsite and a small beach attracted few foreign tourists and some locals, who preferred to avoid traffic to reach the one and only one that in Italy we consider “the beach”: the beach along the sea.

Recently things have changed, the tourist offer has evolved and, thanks to the combination of water and wind, the lake has become the perfect destination for surfers and kite surfers from all over Europe.

I was there on the 2nd of July, and I stopped to observe how the place had changed. Despite being a working day, the beach was quite crowded. However I managed to park easily, and went to film these amazing athletes who seem to dance with the water and the wind.

Dancing with water and wind is also the title I wanted to give to this post.

When I arrived on the beach I immediately thought of @uavalentine , a personal friend and great Local Guide, and her post about SnowKitting:SnowBording & SnowKiting in Kiev, Ukraine, and the most recent about paradigling.

I am sure that she would like the lake of Santa Croce very much.

In the area there are three kite schools, and a sports club, always crowded with people who want to learn.

The beach, fully accessible, is equipped with various bars, and a public bathroom complete with showers. Since the bathroom wasn’t in Google Maps yet, I entered it myself.

If you want to go have fun, and see the Kite Surf pros in action, you have to go from Monday to Friday, when the lake is uncrowded. Then you will really see them dancing with the water and the wind, as if what they do costs no effort.

I couldn’t help but film. I finished editing the video a few minutes ago, adding at the beginning a part made with Google Earth Pro, to make you better understand how close the lake is to the famous Venice. Did you know that with Google Earth Pro you can create wonderful videos?

And finally, after having talked a lot about it, here is the video.

Turn up the volume and dance too, together with these fantastic “water and wind dancers”

Do you like Kitesurfing or Windsurfing? Are there any places in your region to learn and practice these sports?

Do you like to photograph these “water and wind dancers”? Why don’t you share your experience and photos here in Connect by replying to this post?

Thanks for sharing your post, @Niv1234 , pizza looks great in that place.

There are Kite surfers in there?

Great photos @ErmesT , Santa Croce lake looks really good, my favourite photo is the second one, it looks like everyone is standing on the lake  .

It was a brilliant idea to use Google Earth for the opening scene, now I can tell why there is so much wind in Santa Croce lake , I used to use Google Earth Pro for videos until Google Earth Studio was launched, have you used it? It has cool features and you can have more control over the “camera” movements, here is a Video I made with Earth Studio , at that time (2019) it had some bugs, such as croping the frame, I hope it is solved by now.

Here in Mexico there is a similar place, it’s called Valle de Bravo , a lot of people practice paragliding and kitesurf too, I haven’t been there in years, I really want to see the place from above

Hi @ErmesT ,

wow the lake is indeed so crowdy and it is a spectacular show to see! I didn’t image there was so much activities in the lake, the wind must be blowing so strong and it should create the optimal conditions to get all those people, even from all over Europe, there.

The video looks like something filmed somewhere like Bondi Beach, fantastic… and nice music  .

Thank you for sharing this small gem.

Yeah, @LaloPadilla , I use Google Earth Studio too, time by time, but doing this directly in Google Earth is funny. You don’t have all the amazing settings of Studio, but you can easily create your visual tour, and produce a movie.

I like Valle del Bravo, I see they also do paragliding in there

Well, this lake is very adrenaline, but can be can also be very relaxing.

Replying to a post with another post … Wow, @uavalentine , that’s great. Great minds think alike :slightly_smiling_face: :slightly_smiling_face:

Yup, the ones in my photo were probably one team, or maybe two. Look at the face of the girls, painted in blue.

It was amazing, everything seamed to be easy, and this is possible only if you are strongly trained.

I loooove your post too. FYI: paragliding is available too, in the mountains around the lake

Oh nooo, @LuigiZ , the lake wasn’t really too crowded, when I took photos and videos.

But indeed during the weekend is more than crowded, you have to go there early in the morning, or to park very far away.

During the weekend the lake is full of people that wants to learn how to use the kite

Oh got it @ErmesT , from the video mounting looks like it is really crowded  .

Are there also schools or professional trainers who hosts lessons for those new comers willing to learn? And is there always wind to favor those activities or it is limited to some specific seasons or times of the year?

Thank you for asking @LuigiZ

Yes, there are at least three schools of kitesurf, a sporting club and a camping, always fully packed of coloured kites.

This is how the beach appear on the weekend, fully packed of people that is there to learn

The level of the water, on the north side of the lake, is very low. In the next photos you can see the trainers (with the orange jacket) and trainees learning how to control the kite and to restart, if you fall down in the water. I am sure @uavalentine can give us some insight about what happen in the very first lesson :slightly_smiling_face:

And yes, the lake is always windy. The technical explanationabout the wind would be quite boring, but if you like … :slightly_smiling_face:

Would definitely love to try @ErmesT although I don’t know whether I am brave enough to do so LOL… looks fun though. But now, we are still under stricter restriction for traveling due to the pandemic. Wish that things will get back to normal again soon. Stay safe and healthy!
