Gandrung is a traditional dance from Banyuwangi Indonesia. The dance is performed by female dancers and accompanied by traditional music. In the middle of the show, the dancers will invite male audiences to join on the stage. The philosophical meaning of the dance is to express thankfulness to the God for the harvest. Now, the dance is also staged in other events like wedding ceremonies, circumcision, etc. Nowadays, the local government also hold a massive Gandrung dance performance to preserve the local culture by introducing the youth to their local culture and involving them in the event.
I took this video when I visited Kemiren village Banyuwangi last year. This village where many Osing people live has a Sanggar or an art house / studio that usually performs the dance for the tourists who visit this tourist village. Not only presents the performance, this Sanggar also opens dance class for the youth of the village. I think this is a very effective way to promote the local tourism while preserving the local culture.
