In February of this year I was in a very difficult place…Dachau Concentration Camp
it hurts to look at it
there were people
I was terrified that this camp was built long before the war
@KristinaIBRA - I have been to Dachau years ago during the summer.
At the time, the place didn’t have many buildings. All the barracks were just gravel footprints. All that was there was the building to watch the video before walking out there and the original gas chamber showers and ovens. I just remember how small these rooms were and how quiet the place was. Can only hear the crickets / nature sounds with lots of tall green grass and the forests surrounding the camp.
Tagging @ErmesT to your post because there is a group of us here on Connect that have shared our visits to concentration camps. He went to Auschwitz with @AntonellaGr last Summer. He can tell you more.
As for me, I remember the group that I was with we were chatting and laughing as we rode the tour bus up to Dachau, then watched the video, then walked around the camp. We become quieter and more somber as the day progress out there, and when we finally left the camp. I remember looking at the open, green fields, and the book Schindler’s List which later became the movie Schindler’s List.
That day was an experience that I have never forgotten.
Cheers,
Karen
Hi @KarenVChin thank you for tagging me.
You have described my feeling when I was at Birkenau for the European meetup. When I left Birkenau I was more upset than leaving Auschwitz, probably because of the “shadow and light” of a beautiful sunset.
@KristinaIBRA , impressive pics. Have a look here at the beautiful recap by @TorM European Meetup 2018
and here for my “story” at Birkenau Block 25 Birkenau
A question. Did you leave a review after visiting the camp?
Cheers
Antonella
Dear @KristinaIBRA
thank you for this post. I live not far away from this place…
It is unbelievable what people are able to do. It is important to remember, while it is not sure that humans will not do this again…
You have been there in winter and I believe this is even harder to understand that some people could survive this.
I wrote as well a post some month ago about Dachau.
Thank you @AntonellaGr for tagging me.
@KarenVChin ,good that the connect moderators underline the importance of such posts!
Yes it hurts, @KristinaIBRA
As @KarenVChin said, I have been in Auschwitz together with @TorM , @AntonellaGr , @davide7O and many others, A few of us decided to write a post, more to share a feeling than to describe the place, because the only way that you have to show how that kind of place are, is to share the discomfort.
I see you took a photo of a number. Numbers is one of the thing that remained in my mind
Here is my post: International Holocaust Remembrance Day - January 27
You will probably have a few feedback on this post, because it is difficult to read (discomforting).
Don’t worry about that, keep going
Ermes
@AntonellaGr Yes, I left a review
I checked you post, is really impressive, thank you for tagging me
@TorM @ErmesT @AntonellaGr @KristinaIBRA .
This popped up in my recommended YouTube earlier this evening. It lasts almost 30 mins long. American director, Steven Spielberg, famous for Jaws, ET, and the Indiana Jones movies, besides this movie. I cannot believe it was 25 years ago since ‘Schindler’s List’ is now 25+ years old.
He was so motivated talking to Holocaust survivors while filming in Krakow that he after directing this film he decided to create the USC Shoah Foundation (YouTube channel) to let genocide survivors record their stories so the world will never forget.
Karen
Yes, @KarenVChin , it was in 1993.
It was exactly in the time, when I did work like a volunteer for 18 month in Norway with victims of the 2 World War.
I know exactly when my colleagues did invite me to the cinema to see this movie.
I always was focused on this part of my German history, but the movie in this circumstances was somehow unforgettable.
I saw your YouTube right now with my wife from Cracow. I will go to Cracow tonight.
Maybe next week I will go to Schindler Factory and right a post.
Such a huge empty territory!
Absolutely terrifying story. The most terrible in the world maybe. We need these museums to remember and never let such ideas to appear again.
I can’t imagine the feelings after visiting. Sometimes I find some stories or memories… and can’t believe it could really happen.
