Phu Yen is a coastal province in the South Central and the easternmost part of Vietnam. With the picturesque 100-kilometer seaside and mountainous area, the province has been known as one of the most relaxing destinations in Vietnam. More than about 40 km north of Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province, Da Dia Reef is a seashore area of uniformly interlocking basalt rock columns located along the coast in An Ninh Dong Commune, Tuy An District, Phu Yen Province, Vietnam. The area is about 100 meters wide and 250 meters long, composed of an estimated 35,000 columns of basalt rocks. The rocks are dark lava columns with roughly flat surfaces of different shapes - round, pentagon, hexagon, polygon…In Vietnamese it’s named “Da Dia Reef” because it looks like a gigantic beehive or a pile of dinner plates. These rock columns were created from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago; when the molten basalt flows met cold water, they solidified and shaped these rare polygonal formations due to thermal contraction effects.
We can climb up to the top of this breathtakingly beautiful stone hill to capture the spectacular coastal scenery. With the blue sea water and jaw-dropping stone structure, Da Dia reef never fails to impress thousands of tourists every year. This place has been considered one of the most tranquil destinations to relax and escape the city life. The sound of the ocean waves provides vacationers with a peaceful atmosphere with a spectacular scenic view of the sea. Da Dia Reef was enlisted as a National Heritage site in January 1998. These nature’s formations so beautiful that it was have even been attributed to genies who brought their plates to this beach parties, and left them behind when they flew back to heaven.
