I got involved with the Google Local Guides program a little over 5 years back almost inadvertently prompted by the prompts from Google Maps to review and rate places that I had visited. So, it was a fairly sedate start for me the first 3 years. Subsequently, when I realized that my ratings, reviews, photos and videos were indeed making a difference, what was a pass-time of sorts became a hobby and even a most pleasant addiction! Over the past 2 years, I have made fairly rapid progress through the levels and I have just entered the hallowed portals of level 8!
While I am very happy and there is surely a sense of satisfaction that I have been able to make the progress that I have, what is singularly gratifying and gives me a great sense of pride and satisfaction is when I see the response and views of my reviews and the many photos and videos that I have posted over the past few years. At first, I did not realize it, but then it did become very evident that other Google Maps users DO rely on ratings and reviews to make a considered decision to visit a place (or not!). Now, this could be a landmark, an attraction, a microbrewery or a restaurant. Being able to make even a small contribution to this decision- making process of others users has unarguably been the best part of this journey.
Along the way, I believe my smartphone photography skills have improved (my 18-year-old son would beg to differ!) as I very consciously take these photos and videos with the primary objective of sharing on Google Maps.
An important aspect of my Local Guides journey that I would like to share here is being able to share information about spaces in my own local area. So, I reside in this very green part of Bengaluru, India called Indiranagar. Being able to share little nuggets of information especially the many, many parks dotting the area apart from the little, tucked away eating joints has been another gratifying experience.
Net-net, this has been a journey of growth, of learning and (self) discovery.
Sharing here a few photos taken at a park right across the road from where I stay. To say that the BM Kaval Park (https://goo.gl/maps/NfGribK7HH3C9n3BA)) at Indiranagar, Bengaluru is my favourite park would be an understatement given that I am here almost every morning for my runs / walks and fitness routines!
