Cuba - finally visited after 40 years on my dream destination list

Students have always been allowed to study in Cuba, but, a seeming lifetime ago, when I was interested in Havana as a study abroad destination in 1978, my advisor refused to support it as part of my studies. I ultimately ended up with a spectacular semester in Madrid, but always wondered what might have been. 40 years later, as retirement was approaching, my wife and I finally got to visit Havana. The Road Scholar program, for older people, turned out to be an amazing way to meet artists, writers, musicians, dancers, athletes, and just regular people - frequently in their homes. I suspect that sanctioned study in 1970s Soviet era Havana would not have offered any kind of real access to the amazing people in Havana.
