Cruising the Concrete Jungle: Your Guide to Citi Biking NYC 🗽🚴‍♀️

ConnectLive 2025 Post Series. This post is a part of my series before, during, and after ConnectLive 2025 New York City showcasing unique attractions, activities, and facts about the city

So you’re in the Big Apple and itching to explore beyond the subway? Citi Bike is your answer! These blue bikes are everywhere, offering a fun and flexible way to see the city at your own pace, plus get fit and healthy. Think of it as your personal, pedal-powered tour bus!

Getting Started: It’s Easier Than You Think!

Renting a Citi Bike is a breeze. You’ll need the Citi Bike app :mobile_phone: on your phone. Once you’ve downloaded it, you can purchase a day pass or an annual membership. Day passes usually give you unlimited 30-minute rides within 24 hours. Keep an eye on the clock though…Exceeding the time limit incurs extra fees :money_with_wings:, so docking your bike and grabbing another one is key for longer journeys. The app shows you all the available bike stations nearby :round_pushpin:, so you can easily find a ride and a spot to return it. Just push the bike firmly into the dock until you see a green light :green_circle:.

Pro Tips for a Smooth Ride:

  • Plan your route (sort of): While the beauty of Citi Biking is spontaneity, having a general idea of where you’re headed can save you time and energy. Google Maps often has a cycling option that can be helpful.
  • Check the bike before you go: Squeeze the tires and make sure the brakes work properly before you undock.
  • Be aware of traffic: NYC streets can be busy! Stick to bike lanes whenever possible and always be mindful of cars, pedestrians, and those crazy yellow cabs :taxi:.
  • Hydrate! Especially during warmer months, bring a water bottle :droplet: to stay refreshed.
  • Consider off-peak hours: If you’re looking for a more leisurely ride and fewer crowds, try biking during mid-morning or afternoon.

Where to Pedal Your Way Through NYC:

NYC is surprisingly bike-friendly in many areas! Here are a few popular routes:

  • Central Park: Miles of car-free paths await! It’s perfect for a scenic loop and people-watching :eyes:.
  • Hudson River Greenway: This beautiful waterfront path offers stunning views of the city skyline and the Hudson River. You can go for miles!
  • Brooklyn Bridge Park: Enjoy breathtaking views of Manhattan as you cycle through this lovely park. You can even bike across the Brooklyn Bridge itself (though it can get crowded).
  • Governors Island: Take a ferry (bikes are allowed!) to this car-free island for a unique biking experience with amazing harbor views.

Citi Biking is a fantastic way to experience the energy and sights of New York City. Just download the app, hop on a blue bike, and get ready to roll!

Important Note For International Travelers: Thanks for this @RogerOhayashi. For foreigners visiting NYC: download the app and register before arriving, especially if you don’t have sms available in the USA. Otherwise, you will get verification errors and can’t reserve a bike.

Next time I visit USA @JordanBurleson we will bike around Manhattan hahahaha

I would add a tip for foreigners visiting NYC: download app and register before arriving, specially if you don’t have sms available in USA.

Unfortunately I couldn’t join you in this ride because I didn’t receive SMS in my Brazilian phone number :frowning:
So, prepare in advance to enjoy most of the NYC bikes.

I am still upset that you missed out, @RogerOhayashi. We could’ve yelled 'What’s your name!" at everyone we saw and made 1,000s of new friends. I even added a new disclaimer to the post with your feedback!

Bike is always a good option when we’re travelling (when the city doesn’t have too many hills hehe)! It was nice to see the city from another perspective.
