Crossed data of photos on Google Maps

I want to report a recent issue that I have found on Google Maps about photos.

Today I was checking on my App the most viewed photos, and I found something totally weird: one of my photo, with more than 30.000 views, appeared as uploaded on the wrong place.

I was really disappointed, and I opened Maps on desktop (faster for me to manage) to delete the photo.

With my surprise, on desktop the photo was attributed to the correct business but (double surprise) clicking on the photo I can see a mixed attribution.

In fact the photo is uploaded on the correct business, but is showing the name of a different business, where I have contributed too, but with different photos

Anybody else is experiencing this kind of situation?

My top 100 seem to be ok @ErmesT

Just in case its a cache corruption, try clearing your cache in the App and see if it changes anything.

Still crossed both on mobile and desktop

@ErmesT , I like cakes and also fancy ladies clothes, but they should normally not be mixed. Just wanted to let you know that I was able to see the mix-up on your profile also. So the error is as you said not device dependent.

I never noticed this on my profile.

It looks like an indexing issue.

This might be the next excitement to keep us busy for a while @ErmesT hope it clears up before it spreads!

Thank you for the feedback @MortenCopenhagen (About the mix-up, of course).

I have the same mix-up about the two places also on another photo.

Wonder if someone was trying a merge of the two business

Hi @ErmesT ,

I checked my profile as well and I don’t have such problem, at least the first batch of photos … however I think there is something wrong because while checking for you I’ve noticed another problem from the desktop.

The link of the POI on the photo itself (like your Intimissimi) is a broken link in my case (all of them), see below screen, while the link on the list of contributions brings to the correct page.

Moreover when I open the POI page and come back the view is multiplying with a double factor (every time open and back, so x2, x4, x8, … hehe) the list of thumbnails on the photos list, of course it is just a UI glitch as a refresh of the page will bring back just the correct photo(s).

I have not experienced this up to so far @ErmesT .

@LuigiZ that’s common regarding the photo displays doubling up. Just refresh by pressing F5 on browser.

@ErmesT ,

With this problem being reproducible (not periodic) I believe it should be escalated to the relevant developers ASAP to catch and fix it early. With detailed insight into the database structure a senior should be able to pin point what is going on and fix it.

I don’t know how best to do that.

That’s exactly why I am posting here @MortenCopenhagen

To give to the team the possibility to check the issue

Then let’s tag @sonnyNg on this. He has been very helpful on bugs in the past.

Hello @ErmesT

I find that “Emisfero • Centro commerciale” is a big shopping centre and “Intimissimi” is a POI within that.

Incidentally, I observe a duplication at the shopping centre.

One has a name as above & another one is named “Centro commerciale Emisofero” , and the pin appears near the centre.

There must have been an attempt to merge these two POIs disrupting the database.

Further, is the place where you captured the pic, very near to that?

It might be happening that while displaying the photos sorted on views, the Maps program is picking up the nearest POI as per the GPS coordinates.

@ErmesT looked a little here, I think it’s not right

Gone, @To_paul , Thank you for flagging

@C_T , The shopping center is owned by the same owner of the supermarket, and both have the same name (Emisfero). This is of course generating a lot of confusion, and the contributions are going on both places.

When I wrote the review, the second POI didn’t existed, and I didn’t noticed it because I go there just a few times on an year.

The issue appear in two different ways on mobile and on desktop, @C_T , and in any case map’s cannot just pick the nearest place, as the photo is associated to the POI in a database, based on our contributions.

I can understand the opposite (a photo of a shop displayed also on the shopping center, that is a kind of container) so I really suspect a kind of attempt of merge

It is my own pleasure @To_paul , and honestly this is one of the thing that I like more, of being a moderator. The possibility to keep the community clean.

I wrote a post about that, long time ago. It was totally unnoticed, but this is normal, even if a bit sad. Everybody likes emoji, isn’t it? But if you ask to the people why they give a like to a spammer, probably you will have no reply.

BTW, this is irrelevant for me. I will help to clean in any case

Hi @ErmesT ,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! : ]

Regarding the occurrence, it would be quite peculiar, as from what I could see as the two locations of Emisfero • Centro commerciale and Intimissimi be quite close to one another (if the detail could be at any use for the investigation)

As for the moment, I will make sure to check thoroughly on the matter.

Much appreciated also from @MortenCopenhagen for mentioning me!
