Criteria for adding paths/roads - why do some paths take months to review?

Hello all,

I’m just posting here to ask if anybody knows why it is that some paths/trails that I add to Maps are added to the map a day or so after I suggest them (which shows there’s not much of a delay), whereas others are still pending after more than a month, and some get straight up rejected.

To make it more confusing, the paths which have been more or less instantly accepted are of the same type and more or less in the same location as all of those which are still under review! They are also provided with the same proof etc. Does anybody know why it is that this could be the case? Or perhaps there is a certain criteria that needs to be ticked when adding a path etc? How is is that there could be such a varying success rate?

I will also happily provide links to screenshots of emails or my Google Maps Local Guide Edits page if anybody is unclear about what I mean/doesn’t believe me. Many thanks!

Hello @Maxim7

The article, “Why is my edit status “Pending” or “Not Applied”?” answers that well.
Any edit or addition needs verification.
My guess is, a road or path patronized by many is more straightforward to support. That may be the reason for the varied response.

Thank you, @C_T , for replying

I have read that post in the past but unfortunately do not believe it answers my question. As I am referring to adding roads/paths (not places), I would find it hard to believe that these paths are being added by a computer? Surely road/path additions must be verified by a human first? Seeing as that’s presumably the case, then my question is with regards to somebody verifying one path so quickly, but failing to verify another (when it is suggested with all the same proof and is very close to it)

Thank you for asking @Maxim7

As you said, some edits need to be confirmed by a Human check. This is why, with 125 millions of Local Guides in the world, this may take time. In addition, for some edits we ca have a quick confirmation trough a satellite view, or street view, while for others these kind of information are not available. I always keep in a positive way my “pending” edits, because they are not automatically rejected. I had edits applied after several months, and I believe that, to optimize their activity, they should check edits by area, not by date. I know it can be frustrating, but at the end the result will be probably positive.

Patience is something that I have learned to practice

Hello @Maxim7

There can be multiple techniques to verify.

You are aware, Maps can detect traffic congestion. How? The rationale is well known and that is not appreciated by some for privacy reasons.

Nonetheless, the same methodology is possible to verify the usage of any road section also.

Thank you for replying @ErmesT

That does make sense, and I did assume that is likely the case. It’s definitely a good attitude to have though, and I too have had edits accepted after waiting months - it makes it feel worth it when they finally are!

However, with this particular case, I was referring to some paths which are more or less right beside eachother, can easily be seen on both Streetview and satellite imagery and are sometimes even additions to already present paths! It makes little sense to me in this scenario that one would be accepted, and one left pending. But I guess that’s the way it is!
